The Northeast Probate Court will be holding community outreach events for the residents of the Northeast Probate District this month.
Probate Judge Leah Schad will present general court information and answer questions and Chief Clerk Mary Ann Champney will be available to assist with court forms, answer questions and provide information about local resources for families.
Judge Schad said that before COVID, clerks at the court were able to sit down with residents and give personal assistance to people going through a difficult time. S
ince COVID, the Court remains open to the public but space constraints prevent the clerks from spending extended one-on-one time assisting people.
She said this outreach program “will allow court staff to return to our regular engagement with the community.”
Judge Schad and Chief Clerk Champney have been traveling to local senior centers, town halls, and libraries to bring that compassionate service back to people struggling with life events who need the help of the Probate Court.
The Probate Court helps families who have lost a loved one settle their estates, appoints conservators when a family member is no longer able to care for themselves, and appoints guardians to protect the intellectually disabled and handles matters involving children in need.
The Northeast Probate District covers the towns of Ashford, Brooklyn, Eastford, Pomfret, Putnam, Thompson and Woodstock.
