Girls' Roundup
Marianapolis,
Pomfret girls
square off
By Ron P. Coderre
In what was viewed by many as a pair of heavyweight boxers coming together, the Marianapolis girls squared off against Pomfret School in the best matchup of the season thus far.  As it turned out, the hype far outweighed the outcome as Marianapolis won going away.
Pomfret bounced back with a win over Groton School and the Lady Knights continued their winning ways against St. Mark’s School.
In the high school ranks most of the teams continued on their season’s path with only coach Carla Faucher’s Lady Tigers adding victories to this season’s ledger.
Lady Knights Pick Up TKO
Beginning when Pomfret and Marianapolis took the floor for pregame warm-ups one obvious thing was the fact that the Golden Knights had a decided height advantage over their visiting opponents from Pomfret.  As the game progressed between the two heavyweights Marianapolis also demonstrated that it had more overall team speed, athleticism and better shooting in winning 64-43 in what could best be described as a technical knockout.
Holding a slim 14-10 advantage at the 11:32 point of the first half, the Lady Knights ran off a string of 27 points compared to seven by the Lady Griffins to go to the locker room at intermission in front 41-17.  Marianapolis carried the momentum throughout the second half thanks to the play of Julia Ford who came off the bench to run the offense while contributing 10 points.
Rachel Aho, who controlled the inside game for the hosts, finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Caroline Soucy played a strong floor game and finished with 12 points.
Pomfret, which just couldn’t seem to get going due to early foul trouble to key personnel, was led in the scoring column by Alyzae Davis with 13 points and Juliette Lawless with 14 markers.  The Golden Griffins came back strongly in their next game with a 39-15 victory over Groton School as Davis (12) and Mary Redmond (11) were the team’s high scorers for 11-3 Pomfret.
Marianapolis behind a strong defensive effort and the spark of the speedy Soucy continued its winning ways with a 59-28 win over St. Mark’s.  Soucy and Aho were the team’s high scorers posting 12 and 11 points respectively.  In its only other contest the Lady Knights lost to a good Rivers School 53-47.  Aho posted a double-double (11 points – 13 rebounds) and Soucy tallied 13 points for 11-4 and 10–3 NEPSAC-A Marianapolis.
Hyde-Woodstock paced by game high scorer Dossou Ndiaye with 19 points and Janicha Diaz (14) rolled past Providence Country Day 35-20.  The Wolfpack then lost to Falmouth Academy in a low scoring affair 29-26.  Hyde-Woodstock is 4-7 overall and 3-6 in the SENE.
Marianapolis II fell to 3-8 on the season when it was beaten by McDuffie School 47-31.  Kaitie Panagiotu had 11 points in the loss.
