POMFRET — Beginning Jan. 1, the Pomfret Senior Center will join the ranks of many surrounding senior centers by becoming a membership facility. Up until now, Pomfret’s senior center has been the only one in the quiet corner without a membership requirement. Going forward all seniors will be asked to pay an annual $5 membership fee. The Pomfret Senior Association, which was organized 22 years ago, will be the administrative body that will take responsibility for collecting dues. When the $5 membership fee is paid, seniors will receive a membership card.
After much discussion, the Pomfret Senior Advocate Commission (PSAC) recommended to the Pomfret Board of Selectman that the Pomfret Senior Center be a membership-only Center. The Board of Selectman supported this recommendation.
The Pomfret Senior Association (PSA) meets the first Tuesday of the month at noon for lunch and a business meeting. Committees will be formed to plan activities and trips. Those interested in being on a committee should get in touch with a member of the Association or come to a meeting.
Local seniors interested in joining can come to the next meeting at noon Jan. 6 or mail their checks to: Pomfret Senior Association Treasurer, Town Hall, 5 Haven Road, Pomfret Center, CT 06259. Membership cards will be sent to each new member. All local seniors are welcome to join.
The Pomfret Senior Center is open from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays. TEEG will continue oversee the Center and provide its popular “Learn at Lunch” programs at no cost every Tuesday, except the first Tuesday of the month.
