PUTNAM — Day Kimball Healthcare recently received re-accreditation for its Sleep Center located at Day Kimball Hospital and its Laboratory which conducts tests at the Hospital, manages four community-based blood draw facilities, and provides blood draw services to skilled nursing facilities in the region.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine granted a five-year accreditation to the Sleep Center for both inpatient and in-home studies and the College of American Pathologists awarded the Laboratory a two-year accreditation.
In both cases, rigorous onsite inspections of the facilities were conducted by the respective accreditation committees. The process also includes review of policies and procedures and verification they are being properly followed.
Sleep medicine includes the diagnose and treatment of sleep-related breathing disorders such as sleep apnea as well as other disorders such as restless leg syndrome (RLS), abnormal REM behaviors, parasomnias, nocturnal seizure disorder, narcolepsy, sleep/wake disturbances, shift work disorders and jet lag disorders. The Sleep Center, opened in 1999 with an expansion in 2009, conducts studies onsite overnight and during the day as well as offers in-home studies, working with adults and children. A neurologist and pulmonologist, both boarded in sleep medicine, are supported by six registered technologist and one technician. All studies are pre-certified for physicians. In 2014, Day Kimball conducted 1122 studies.
