PUTNAM — Recently week, the Putnam School District was officially notified that Putnam High School has been fully accreditation by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The accreditation process began back in October when a visiting accreditation team from NEASC spent four days at the high school, examining programs and interviewing staff, students as well as families. The accreditation news comes on the heels of Putnam High School being named as a “Best High School” by U.S. News and World Reports. In the accreditation report, Putnam High School received 26 commendations. These included:
• the safe, positive and respectful culture that fosters student responsibility and results in shared ownership and pride for the school
• the dynamic, collaborative and inclusive process used to identify and commit to the school’s core values and beliefs about learning
• the development of challenging, measurable 21st century learning expectations for all students which address academic, social and civic competencies
• the efforts to ensure that the core values, beliefs and 21st century learning expectations are actively reflected in the culture of the school and are beginning to drive curriculum, instruction and assessment
• the consistent use of teaching strategies by teachers designed to personalize learning, engage students as active and self-directed learners, and emphasize inquiry, problem solving, and higher order thinking
• the efforts to keep families regularly updated on student achievement including the online grading portal and progress reports and report cards which are mailed to parents and are updated on Edline
• the strong relationships with community organizations that provide services and opportunities for students and their families
• the opportunities for parents to be a voice for change through parent advisory board working collaboratively with the board of education
• the opportunities available for a variety of real-world experiences outside of classrooms within the community.
The full accreditation report will be posted on the district website.
Superintendent William Hull said: “Again, this is affirmation of the quality education that is provided for our students. I want to thank the Putnam community for the continuing support, as well as, our students and staff for their continuous hard work.”
