WPCA gets
state award
PUTNAM — The town’s Water Pollution Control Commission received the 2016 Small Community Public Health Drinking Water Merit Award last week. The state Department  of  Public  Health  (DPH)  Drinking Water Section  made the award.
This award is given during National Drinking Water Week to recognize small community public water systems serving fewer than 10,000 people that have made outstanding contributions to the field of drinking water in the area of water operations and administration.
This award recognizes the performance of a PWS serving less than 10,000 individuals.  Award recipients are recognized for working to address issues in a proactive manner, recognizing the need to maintain and improve the water quality and quantity of their water system, and upholding public health as their number one priority.
The Putnam Water Pollution Control Commission is receiving this award in recognition of the scope of work done to the public water system, including: 
Park Street Wellfield Expansion: Development  of seven new  production wells at the  Park  Street Wellfield to augment  the system’s  supply  due to the  projected  reduction  in use of the Little  River (primary source  of supply); construction of a new treatment facility at the Park Street Wellfield to serve the new production wells  and  three existing  production  wells. The  treatment  system  is  intended  to  provide adequate  chlorination  (4-log  removal), corrosion  control,  and  pH adjustment of well water  to ensure the quality is safe for drinking.
Water Main Replacement: Replacement  of  approximately  45,915  lineal  feet  of  water  main  throughout  the  distribution system that is 100 years old or older; cleaning and relining of approximately 8,665 lineal feet of existing water main in 15 different streets.  This water main  replacement/improvement  project  is  being  completed  to  maintain reliability of water supply to customers. and prevent the likelihood of supply disruption due to main break.
Water Main Interconnection: Completed Water Main Interconnection to Crystal Water Company that allows Putnam to provide continuous water service to its customers in the event of emergency situation.
Pilot Study of Filtration System to Improve Well Water Quality: Completed a biological filtration system pilot study to determine if such treatment is effective process to remove excess levels of iron and manganese from the production_wells at the Park Street Wellfield.
Groundwater Under the Direct Influence (GWUDI) of Surface Water Study: Completed the required GWUDI study for Wells SG-2, SG-3, SG-4, and SG-5 to determine if these sources of supply are directly under the direct influence of surface water in the area in accordance with the terms of the Well Use Approval for these wells.
