KILLINGLY — The Killingly Community came together for the third annual Mother’s Day Classic Basketball tournament where benefits are generated for the Jesse Richeed’s Memorial Scholarship. Nearly $2,000 was raised.
The scholarship is on behalf of Jesse “JayR” Richeeds, who was a student athlete as the running back and one of the leaders on the football at Killingly High School. He also excelled in the classroom and was a very popular person in the community. He was a well-liked music artist before transitioning to UConn before dying unexpectedly. The scholarship was created by Kevin Ravanelle, who was a close friend to Jay Richeeds. In the first year the donation was $800 and then doubled its donations to $1600.
In this year’s the total approached $1900.
Eight teams took part in this classic and the championship game consisted of the first-year champions “Triple U” squad, and Putnam Science Academy team. The game went back and forth all game with Triple U coming with the victory over PSA by a score of 41 to 35. The award will be presented on June 13 at Killingly High School to a student who is a student athlete who puts in the time to their sport and their school work.
