The Clippers knew last week they need three games to secure a seat at the table in the CIAC State Tournament.
And with a long two weeks of on-the-road baseball ahead of them, they would have to win at least one game during the week and try to compete against some top-ranked ECC teams.
May 14 the Clippers played Bacon Academy (14-5) and would only muster up one run in the 1-11 loss. May 16 they would travel to Windham (1-18) and picked up the 7th win of the year with a 8-0 victory over the Whippets .
And then May 18 coach Heir may have thrown everyone that could reach the plate against a good St. Bernard’s (9-9) team. Scott Davagian would start at Dodd Stadium and would record the loss as the Saints put the Clippers down 14-0.
The Clippers had three remaining games May 21 to secure a State tourney berth. They won against Wheeler April 21, 8-0, but struggled since then — only winning three games in their last 13 outings.
Putnam‘s saving grace is their last two games will be a double header against another struggling team, Grasso Tech who are on a six-game slide. Grasso has a 2-14 record with only Putnam to play to end their season.
