Franklin L. Newth,
Korean war vet
PUTNAM — Franklin L. Newth, 92, of Putnam, died June 20, 1919, at Davis Place in Danielson. He was the husband of Lillian (Peckham) Newth. She died Feb. 3, 2017.
He was born Jan. 24, 1927, in Winchester, son of the late Lewin E. and Genevieve (Oles) Newth.
Frank made his home in Putnam most of his life. He was a heavy equipment operator and truck driver. He worked for the Town of Putnam Highway Department for 18 years, after retirement he worked for Rawson Sand and Gravel for six years. Frank enjoyed gardening and farming and his motorcycles.
Frank was a veteran of the Korean conflict serving with the U.S. Army.
He leaves his son Peter G. Newth (Kelly A) of Putnam; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his five brothers and sisters.

Denny G. Varney,
Vietnam war vet
BROOKLYN — Denny Guy Varney, 76, died Nov. 25, 2018, in the solace of his home in Brooklyn.
Born Aug. 18, 1942, in Hartford, Denny enlisted in the U.S. Air Force for three years with one tour to Vietnam. He then continued serving his communities in Newington and Hartford for 35 years as a postal service worker.
He was a humble, artistic man who revered wilderness and biodiversity. He leaves a daughter, Lorna Valentine Varney and extended family and friends. A service to honor Denny will be at 2:30 p.m. June 29 at the S. Glastonbury Congregational Church. Donations: Rivers Alliance of Connecticut. Smith and Walker/Gagnon & Costello Funeral Homes.
Evelyn C. Apley
ARIZONA — Evelyn C. Apley, known by many as “Bubba” or “Evie”, 87, of West Sun Coast Dr., died March 21, 2019, at the Banner Gateway Medical Center in Gilbert, Ariz., under the care of her granddaughter, Jessica Apley.
She was born in 1931 in Evelyn Christine Place on Senexet Road in Woodstock. At nine months of age, after her mother’s passing, she was adopted by her great aunt, Claire Morgan.
Evelyn lived in Putnam and attended a private Catholic boarding school most of her young life. She attended nursing school achieving her LPN certification.
In 1953, Evelyn met and married Steward Apley. They lived in Pomfret for 56 years. They were owners and operators of the Pomfret Gun Shop. Stewart died in 1981 after working many years for Loos & Company in Pomfret.
After raising her seven children and her granddaughter, Evelyn and Steward ran the Pomfret Gun Shop. Her passion for guns and her love of salesmanship were extraordinary. Upon her retirement she moved to New Hampshire to be with her daughter, Lisa and her husband Kevin Bianchi along with their children. Evelyn loved New Hampshire. She enjoyed shopping, the park, walks, her garden including her tomato and pineapple plants. She especially enjoyed her Friday afternoon Chinese lunches with Kevin, the children and grandchildren.
Evelyn then moved to join her son Neil Apley in Marathon, Fla. where she enjoyed fishing with Neil on his boat. She loved birds, big and small. She would feed them even when she was not supposed to. They were a true pleasure for her. She had a very big heart, was kind and thoughtful and was always there for anyone. All that knew her were so lucky to have known her, the “Wise Apple” that she was.
She leaves three sons, Mark Apley (Sveta) of Pomfret Center, Frederick Apley (Joyce) of Chepachet, and Neil Apley of Marathon; her daughter, Lisa Bianchi of Milford, N.H.; her grandchildren, Jessica Apley, Nicholas Apley, Angela Szeredy, Elise Martin, Michael Apley, Allison Onny, Nicole Hopcraft Garrett Bianchi, Olivia Bianchi, Joshua Karamanakis; great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her children, Gary Apley, Lorrian Apley and Claire Apley.
The Graveside Service will be at 3 p.m. June 28 where she will be laid to rest with her daughter at St. Mary Cemetery, Putnam.
Sarah Coutu
E. KILLINGLY — Sarah Coutu, 41, of Tucker District Rd., died June 14, 2019, at home, after a battle with her illness. Born in 1978 in Putman, she was the daughter of Carole (Paquin) Coutu of E. Killingly and her late biological father Charles Coutu and the man that she looked up to as her father Ernest Chisler.
Sarah was a devout member of the Congregational Church of Putnam. She enjoyed baking, arts and crafts, making hook rugs, and scrapbooking. She always had a smile on her face. She especially found joy in walking her dog Chloe.
She leaves Carole Coutu of E. Killingly; a brother, Jeremy Coutu of Colchester; a sister, Michelle Coutu of E. Killingly; and a nephew and niece, Wyatt and Abigail Coutu of Colchester.
Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 29 in Gilman Funeral Home and Crematory, 104 Church St., Putnam, followed by a service in the funeral home at 1.
James D. Fasshauer
WEBSTER — James D. Fasshauer, 56, died June 20, 2019, at the Westborough Healthcare.
He was born Leominster, Mass., son of the late Homer P. Fasshauer and Patricia A. (Williams) Falls and lived here all his life. He was a member of the PACC, enjoyed building models, repairing electronics and tinkering.
He leaves his fiancée Brendalee M. Weeks of Webster; two daughters, Joy Zacek of N. Grosvenordale and Nancy Fasshauer of Webster; two brothers, Michael Fasshauer of N. Grosvenordale and Scott Falls of Webster; a sister Deborah Vieira of Charlton; four grandchildren, Hope, Paris, John and Damyen.
A graveside service at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Webster, will be announced. Shaw-Majercik Funeral Home, Webster.
Gale Ann Houghton
PUTNAM — Gale Ann (Pezanko) Houghton, 65, of Putnam, died, May 14, 2019, at home. She was born Oct. 3, 1953, in Putnam, daughter of the late Lawrence and Rita (LaRiviere) Pezanko. She was the wife of Michael G. Houghton; they were married Aug. 13, 1991.
She enjoyed interior home designing and spending time in her beautiful gardens.
She leaves her husband Michael G. Houghton of Putnam and his children Shawn and Shannon; a daughter Heather Dietz Millette (Matthew) of Woodstock; eight grandchildren Logan, Trevor, Carly, Kayla, Haley, Ashley, Alyssa and John; two brothers Larry and Peter. She was predeceased by two sisters Nancy and Joyce.

Wilfred Minor
POMFRET — Wilfred Minor, 63, died June 8, 2019, at home.
He was born in Woonsocket, R.I., and living in Pomfret for the past two years, prior to that living in Rhode Island. Wilfred was the facilities manager for the Rhode Island Food Bank. He also was an arborist and enjoyed gardening.
He leaves his friend and caregiver Mary Cronin Briggs of Pomfret; Sister Robin Nory of Warwick, R.I. Shaw-Majercik Funeral Home, Webster.
Alice M. Durand
PUTNAM — Alice M. (Pollock) Durand, 77, died June 10, 2019, in Davis Place, Killingly. Her husband, Robert Durand, died in 1997.
She was born and raised in Ganesvoort, N.Y., a daughter of Clifford and Iona (Mallory) Pollock and graduated from South Glens Falls High School in 1960. She lived in Plainfield before moving to N. Grosvenordale in 1977. She had lived in Putnam since 2001. Mrs. Durand worked as a clerk in the houseware department at Walmart in Putnam for 20 years.
She leaves three children, Christine A. Bastek (Scott) of Thompson, Constance E. McNally (Thomas) of Webster and Dean D. Hare (Michelle) of Fort Mill, S.C.; four stepchildren, Daniel Durand (Joy) of Pomfret, Doug Durand of Woodstock, Donna Oliver (Andrew), also of Woodstock, and Diane Breen of Charlton; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and 12 step-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Langworthy of Ganesvoort. She was predeceased by her sister Joyce Lapointe Deitrich, by her nephew Mark Langworthy and by her brother-in-law, Roger Langworthy.

Dorothy Hebert
ROGERS — Dorothy C. (Kaczor) Hebert, 85, died June 5, 2019, at the Westview Healthcare Center, Dayville.
She was the wife of Richard “Babe” R. Hebert Sr., the love of her life, who died in 2011. She was born in Goodyear, daughter of the late John A. and Mary (Poprawa) Kaczor and lived here most of her life. She was a customer service sales representative for the Rogers Corp. She enjoyed reading, gardening, knitting and playing cards. She was an avid UConn Huskies basketball fan and New England Patriots fan.
She leaves two sons Richard Hebert Jr. (Susan) of Rogers, Randy Hebert and partner Maxine of Union; daughter Diane Casaceli and partner Michael of Southborough, Mass. She was predeceased by three brothers John Kaczor of Attawaugan, Carl Kaczor of Danielson and Edward Kaczor of Newport, R.I. Donations: Jude Children’s Hospital. Shaw-Majercik Funeral Home, Webster.
Hope Lapierre
N. GROSVENORDALE — Hope A. (Bouthiette) Lapierre, 61, died May 21, 2019, at Harrington Hospital at Hubbard, Webster.
She was born in Milford, Mass., daughter of the late Omer Bouthiette and Lorraine (Houde) Bouthiette living in N. Grosvenordale for the past three years prior to that living in Upton, Mass., most of her life. She owned and operated Country Sooper in Upton.
She leaves a daughter Nicole Hagan of Mendon, Mass.; a sister Dianne Mager (Malcom) of Webster; two grandchildren, Emma and Cameron.
