Centaurs
sweep
tourney
The Woodstock Academy Centaurs Gold prep basketball team finished up the first half of its season and went into the holiday break on a good note with a 60-42 win over Thetford Prep Dec. 22.
It completed a three-game run for the Centaurs through the Basketbull tournament which also saw the Centaurs down Mt. Zion Prep, 84-76, Dec. 21 and the International Sports Academy, 89-64, Dec. 19.
The three victories raised the Gold team’s mark to 13-1 on the season and extended its win streak to seven games going into the break.
The Centaurs broke out to a 14-point lead, 29-15, in the first half against Thetford Prep and then maintained that advantage throughout the second half.
Woodstock Academy coach Jacque Rivera used his bench liberally in the game with Josh Davis being the only player to see the court for more than half the game.
Davis played almost 24 minutes, Quinton McElroy played just under 20 minutes.
As a result, there was only one player in double digits as Cairo McCrory delivered 13 points in 13 minutes.
McCrory was 2-of-3 from beyond the 3-point arc and was also 5-of-7 from the free throw line.
Lawrence Foreman and Michael Jefferson each scored seven points with Foreman adding a team-best five rebounds.
The Centaurs had it a little tougher in their second meeting this season with Mt. Zion Prep.
The Centaurs had also downed Mt. Zion in the National Prep Invitational tournament on Nov. 24.
Ronnie DeGray had a big day for the Centaurs as he made 7-of-10 from the floor including three 3-pointers and was 6-of-6 from the charity stripe to finish with a game-high 23 points.
Dyondre Dominguez got hot in the second half and finished with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting and McCrory had another good game, playing all but two minutes, and finished with 17 points on 7-for-11 shooting with two more 3-pointers.
Despite the scoring, the Centaurs couldn’t shake Mt. Zion which trailed by only six at the half, 40-34, and the two teams played even in the second half.
Woodstock Academy opened the Basketbull tournament with a morning game Dec. 19 and the Centaurs shook off the cobwebs quickly for the 25-point victory.
DeGray opened the tournament with a sparkling performance, making 9-of-13 from the floor and finishing with 22 points. He also led the Centaurs with eight rebounds.
McElroy was the only other player in double figures with 10 points.
The Gold team returns to action Jan. 8 with a game at home against the Hoosac School.

Blue split last 2 before break
The Centaurs played their final game before the Christmas break Dec. 20 and posted a 71-50 win over Hamden Hall School.
The Centaurs went into the break with an 11-5 record.
“I was really proud of the energy,” said Blue coach Denzel Washington. “It was great to get the bounce back win before the break.”
Vondre Chase led the Centaurs with 18 points and contributed three rebounds.
Darryl MacKey (6 rebounds) and Michael Eurquhart (5 caroms) both added 11 points.
The Centaurs needed the win after they struggled the night before.
It’s always a tough time of year for basketball teams especially prep basketball squads.
With the holiday break within reach, and most thinking about heading home for Christmas, it’s tough to keep the focus on the floor and the Centaurs ran into that issue.
As a result, the Blue team fell to Lee Academy, 61-30, at the Basketbull tournament at the South End Community Center.
The Centaurs shot under 20 percent from the floor, making just 10 of 51 shots and were 0-for-20 from beyond the 3-point line.
Chase led the Centaurs with 10 points while Eurquhart and Paul Hosey getting five points each.
Eshete Calvo led Woodstock Academy with six rebounds.
The Blue also return to action at 5 p.m. Jan. 8 with a game at home against Hoosac School.
