PUTNAM — Thirty-six community members stepped off with organizers from the Northeast District Department of Health and its HealthQuest Northeast Connecticut coalition of public health partners for two walking sessions held on April 13. Participants started at the bandstand in Putnam’s Rotary Park. A dynamic warm-up was hosted by Tackle the Trail Race Director Monique Wolanin at the 7 a.m. walk, and by NDDH intern Madalyn Lowell during the 5 p.m. session. Walkers then stepped off for the 2-mile walk along the Putnam River Trail to the Farmers Market Pavilion and back.
“We were delighted to organize these opportunities for community members to get out of the house and get onto a beautiful trail for some healthy physical activity,” said NDDH Education and Communications Coordinator Linda Colangelo. “This event kicks off another segment of the HealthQuest ConNECTicuTRAILS Project which is linking people to over 500 miles of trails through the Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor.” ConNECTicuTRAILS is grant-funded by the CT Department of Public Health.
The event also served to reunite former models, coaches and community partners of the Follow the Fifty Models of Heart Health Campaign, a local women’s heart health initiative from 2012 that rose to national prominence.
