HARTFORD — Recently  the High Interest Art Club from Putnam Middle School attended the 12th Annual Middle School Arts conference at the University of Hartford’s Art School. Each student was able to participate in two of the 13 artist led workshops.
The workshops that Putnam students took part included Plein Air Painting, Watercolor, Pen & Ink, Cartooning, Printmaking, Acrylic & Mixed Media, Fun with Freaky Fractals & Digital Media, and Kaleidoscopes.  The conference was designed for students and teachers to partake in “hands-on” workshops and experience media that they may have never tried before. The Arts in the Middle conference helped promote visual arts among middle school students and provided opportunities for art students from diverse backgrounds to work together.
“I really hope we are able to come back to take these workshops next year,” said one 7th grade student from Putnam.  Students were able to learn about and use new media. “I really like how we were able to take workshops about materials that we knew nothing about and use them to make a finished piece of art,” a 6th grader stated. Students also learned how artists work in the real world. “It was a great opportunity to learn from real artists, said one eighth grader from Putnam.
The 12th Annual Middle School Arts conference at the University of Hartford’s Art School was an amazing opportunity and experience for Putnam Middle School students. Each student can home with two art projects that were either completed or in progress. Putnam Middle School’s Art Teacher, Ms. Larrow, added, “It was wonderful to see our students excited about art and learning.  I hope we are able to attend the conference again next year.”

THOMPSON — College commitments for local athletes continue to make the news as Marianapolis guard Michael Mallory recently announced that he will be attending Southern Connecticut State University on a full basketball scholarship in September.
Mallory, a postgraduate student who previously played at Holy Cross High School in Waterbury, had a great season for the Golden Knights and coach Andrew Vitale after recovering from reconstructive surgery for a torn left ACL suffered in 2012.  He was instrumental in leading the Knights to a 21-9 record.  He finished the season averaging 17.6 points per game, with four rebounds per contest and 41.6 per cent shooting from the floor.  He was second on the team in assists.
“I’m excited about playing basketball in college.  I feel comfortable with my choice and playing at the next level.  It’s close to home, which one of the reasons for my choice,” said Mallory.
Southern Connecticut State University, in New Haven, is an NCAA Division II school.  The Owls play in the Northeast-10 Conference, one of the strongest Division II conferences in the country.
“Michael has been one of the hardest working kids I have ever had in my time at Marianapolis.  He worked tirelessly after his knee injury, over the summer and throughout the fall with our trainer, Buddy Drew, to get to where he is today.  Michael is a winning basketball player, and there is no doubt in my mind that he will be a great player in the NE-10 for years to come,” said  Vitale.

PUTNAM — Charter Oak Federal Credit Union will open a new full-service branch in Putnam to better serve its growing membership there and accommodate its continuing growth across the upper reaches of Windham County.
Charter Oak’s new Putnam location, which opens at 10 a.m. July 1, will be its 13th branch in New London and Windham counties and will absorb Quiet Corner’s operations on Providence Street.
Charter Oak’s new Putnam branch at 7 Providence Pike (Route 44) is conveniently located at Exit 97 off Interstate 395 and will feature two drive-ups, a drive-up 24 hour ATM and full-branch services inside. Lobby hours will be Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Drive-up hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. until 12 noon.
“This new branch gives Charter Oak a strong new presence in an area that we hadn’t been able to fully serve – until now,” said Brian A. Orenstein, Charter Oak’s Chief Executive Officer. “And it provides strategic value to Charter Oak, given our merger with Quiet Corner Community Credit Union, Inc., and our expanding membership in the greater Putnam, Thompson and Woodstock areas,” he said.
The new Putnam site will be Charter Oak’s third full-service branch in Windham County. The credit union has Windham County branches in Willimantic and Dayville, in addition to its branches across New London County. Charter Oak also operates a branch inside Killingly High School, to help further financial literacy at the high school level.
The merger of Charter Oak and Quiet Corner, effective June 30, 2013, has received final regulatory approval from the Connecticut Department of Banking, which regulates Quiet Corner, and the National Credit Union Administration, Charter Oak’s federal regulatory agency. Quiet Corner had assets of $1.7 million as of March 31, 2013.
Audrey Lefevre, Quiet Corner’s Manager/Treasurer, will serve as Branch Supervisor for the new Putnam branch. Sonya Armstrong, who is Branch Manager for Charter Oak’s Dayville location, will also serve as Branch Manager in Putnam.
