WOODSTOCK — As the school year drew to a close, drawing students from The Woodstock Academy showcased artwork inspired by The Palmer Arboretum in Woodstock.
Prior to the art show, students visited the Arbortum for a tour with Bill Brower, the Arboretum’s director’s board chair, and Philippa Paquette a member of the Arboretum’s committee and a trustee at The Woodstock Academy. Gloria Hanczar, art teacher at The Woodstock Academy, said “The students were captivated by the wealth of information provided.”
The Arboretum provided students with a compilation of trees, flowers, and shrubs in their collection of native plants. Students then researched the plants and completed several studies before crafting the final pieces for submission in the show.
The arboretum committee invited local award-winning impressionist painter Barbara Lussier to judge the competition. Lussier was impressed with the standard of student work and noted the excellent instruction from Academy art teachers. In the end Lussier selected several pieces that stood out among the submissions.
Freshman Maximillian Bosio was honored with Best in Show for his landscape. Senior Yingnan Zhu won first place and sophomore Zhexaun Wu received second place. Three students, junior Lindsey O’Dea, freshman Jordyn Brousseau, and sophomore Kaylynn Lafemina, received honorable mention.
The art show began four years ago to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Arboretum. Academy art teachers Susan LaGrow and Gloria Hanczar have both been involved in encouraging student submissions throughout the years.
According to Paquette, “It was “a real eye opener for the students to see that we have this garden.” The Palmer Arboretum is nestled among the historic homes on Woodstock Hill on Rt. 169 and is just down the road from The Academy’s North Campus. In the words of Paquette, the public park is “peaceful and quiet” and is “a hidden gem” in Woodstock.
The proximity has provided many opportunities for collaboration between the Arboretum and The Academy. In addition to the art show, classes from The Academy often visit the Arboretum to enjoy the natural space and, in turn, many students offer their time to maintain the Arboretum’s grounds.
“We really love having the students come down” said Paquette.
The art show celebrates the Palmer Arboretum and Woodstock’s native plants through the artistic talents of students. The artwork will be on display at Palmer Arboretum throughout the summer.

Almost $10k Raised
The seventh annual Paddle for a Cure raised $9,962 for the Rose Bove LaRose Cancer Center at Day Kimball Hospital. The funds will support the Cancer Center’s efforts to continually provide the most up to date facilities and technologies for the patients who receive care at the nationally accredited cancer center each year.  Last year more than 7,000 treatments were provided in their infusion clinic. Paddle for a Cure is a kayaking event founded and organized by northeastern Connecticut native Lance Collins, an avid kayaker who has lost five family members to cancer, most recently his uncle in 2010. His uncle’s passing prompted Collins to organize the first Paddle for a Cure in 2011. The annual event has now raised more than $64,000 in total for the cancer center at Day Kimball Hospital.

Students
transported to
Portugal
POMFRET — The Pomfret Community School-PTO whisked students and stfff to Portugal during the recent Cultural Arts Week. It was a week-long, school-wide program.
The students were immersed in the Portuguese culture through classroom visits by docents. These volunteer docents shared crafts, cooking, video presentations and folklore stories of Portugal. The day long Market Place gave students the opportunity to experience the culture firsthand. While Portuguese Fado music filled the school lobby, students made Portuguese Man o’ War paper sun catchers and paper puppets of the legendary Rooster of Barcelos. Rice pudding and Sumol, a favorite beverage in Portugal, were served. The week commenced with a presentation of Portugal: An Adventure in Discovery. This aerial DVD gave a bird’s eye view of the country.
PCS-PTO thanked volunteers: Frank Aleman, Tonya Brock, Joe Costa, Clarinda Ferreira, Miguel Ferreira, Jen Flanagan, Jeannie Heroux, Beth Jacquet, Kristin Lavitt, Kerri Murray, Michelle Pike, Martha Schultz, Marlena Tedisky, Kristie Tyler and Lindsey Verraneault. Pomfret Girl Scout Troop 65500, PCS Art Club, under the direction of Hollis Abram, Cultural Arts Committee Co-Chairs Melanie Ferreira and Michelle McCorkle-Milardo, PTO members Melanie Ferreira, Holly Gadoury, Melissa Keats, Michelle McCorkle-Milardo and Michelle Pike.
Clarinda Ferreira of N. Smithfield, R.I., a native of Mortagua, Portugal and a proud grandparent of three PCS students, single handedly supplied the Market Place with her personal collection of Portuguese items. She spent the day stamping every student’s passport and spent hours the day before helping to prepare the rice pudding, since she was kind enough to share her personal recipe. She also allowed the students authentic and detailed knowledge of the Portuguese culture, the meaning of the items on display and her personal stories.
