POMFRET — The 2023 Patrick Wood Scholar Award was presented to nineth-grader Alexandra Lee at Patrick’s memorial beech tree near the Pomfret School chapel in mid-July. Lee is the 20th recipient of the award begun in 2006 when Patrick died. She graduated from Rectory School in May and will attend Pomfret School in the fall with the help of Pat’s scholarship.
Lisette Rimer, Patrick’s mother, said: “Lee is a hardworking and well-liked student, who takes her time on assignments. Her goal is to improve and grow based on the feedback she receives from her teachers. She was chosen for her academic achievement and strong character, attributes that Patrick represented when he graduated as valedictorian from Pomfret School in 2001. He earned perfect SAT scores and graduated from Stanford with honors in 2005. He was a top programming intern at the Automation & Drives division of Siemens when he passed away. “
In addition to her academics, Lee is a strong hockey player, well known in hockey rinks all over North America. Rimer said, “Above Alexandra’s successes and accolades, we wish her happiness and joy at Pomfret in both academics and hockey.”
Patrick’s parents, Bob Wood and Lisette Rimer, also recognized Louisa Jones, who has shepherded Pat’s award since its beginning. Louisa coached and counseled Patrick and his twin sister Libby during their time at Pomfret School and has supported many events held in Pat’s honor, including an art show with artwork donated by Libby’s classmates, a concert in Patrick’s honor called “Playing for Patrick,” and memorial trees donated to Pomfret School and Pomfret Community School by local resident Charles Stoddard. Pat’s father, Robert Wood, said, “Louisa’s many kindnesses to our family over the years has only been exceeded by her sincere zeal in promoting the award amongst the Pomfret School community and in the past, and now present, recipients. She has kept Patrick’s memory viable and contemporary with every passing year.”
