PUTNAM — A joint investigation of a Providence Street fire by the Putnam Fire Marshal’s Office and Putnam Police Department lead to the arrest of a juvenile, according to the Fire Marshal’s Office.
Smoke was reported coming from a vacant building at the former Metal Mast Marine property on Providence Street May 13.
The first arriving police officer spotted a juvenile male in the immediate area and detained him. The Putnam Fire Marshal’s Office found “multiple non-communicating fires” and determined the incident was incendiary. The Putnam Police Department conducted the criminal investigation, ultimately leading to juvenile’s arrest.
A quick response by firefighters from the Putnam Fire Department and timely arrival by the Putnam building official, who kept the largest of the fires at bay with a fire extinguisher, prevented the fire from progressing. The fire was brought under control in less than 30 minutes with the assistance of mutual aid from the East Putnam, Attawaugan, Danielson, and South Killingly fire departments. No injuries were reported, and damage was limited to the contents inside the building.
If anyone has any more information concerning this incident, they’re asked to contact Fire Marshal Scott Belleville at (860) 963-6800 X112 or the Putnam Police Department at (860) 928-6565.
