It’s a new year and Putnam Science Academy basketball coach Tom Espinosa isn’t allowing any grass to grow under his feet.  Following a 37-4 season that saw the Mustangs reach the National Prep School Championship semifinals, Espinosa has begun the recruiting process for the upcoming school year and season.

Following the announcement that Putnam High School cager Dan Porcic would be transferring, Espinosa announced that former St. John’s Prep of Shrewsbury, Mass., standout Adham Floyd will play for the Mustangs beginning in September.

Floyd is fresh off a four-year career at St. John’s Prep where he will graduate in June.  He’ll enter Putnam Science Academy as a postgraduate student.  As a senior last season, Floyd, a 6-foot, 2-inch combo guard, led the Johnnies to a 23-2 record and the Central Mass District Championship.  The team eventually reached the Division I finals before falling in the title game.

As a combo guard, Floyd brings ball handling and shooting skills to the 18 Maple St. campus.  Last season he averaged 13 points per game while dishing out an impressive seven assists per contest.  He also corralled seven rebounds per game.  Floyd, who scored more than 1000 points at St. John’s during his four-year career, was the City of Worcester Player of the Year for his heroics.

“We’re pleased that Adham has chosen to attend Putnam Science Academy.  He a fine you man who brings solid basketball credentials to our program, while also being an outstanding student in the classroom,” said Espinosa.

Floyd, who played for legendary coach Bobby Foley at St. John’s, joins returnees Hamidou Diallo, Eric Ayala, Tyreek Perkins, Jaheam Cornwall and Kevin Smith who will be back for another season in September.

“We have a great core of players coming back and Adham should fit in with this team immediately,” said Espinosa.

Floyd comes from a solid basketball background.  His dad, 6-9 Ernie Floyd, had a great career at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester.  His sister Charde Floyd was a four-year standout at Assumption College.
