PSA grads urged to go with the ‘fire to help others’
PUTNAM — The Class of 2025 at Putnam Science Academy’s graduation ceremony, held May 24, was the school’s 19th commencement.
The Class of 2025 heard moving speeches from two of their own—Salutatorian John Devine, a standout multi-sport athlete and CCSU baseball commit, and Valedictorian Dominick LaDuca, who committed to play men’s basketball at the University of New Haven.
Devine, who was celebrated not only for his academic performance but also his leadership on and off the field, encouraged his classmates to seek out motivation in their everyday lives.
“Instead of waiting for inspiration from someone or something,” Devine said, “look for the inspiration in everyone around you. Steal it, make it your own, and you’ll be inspired and inspirational every day.”
LaDuca, whose senior season included a harrowing injury—a jaw broken in two places from an elbow to the face—delivered a powerful message about grit and mental fortitude.
“Get rid of the ‘why me?’ mindset. Life is always going to punch you in the face. It’s how you get up and respond,” he said, recalling the pain and frustration of his injury, and the strength it took to finish the season and school year on a high note.
Benjamin Ahmed, an Oklahoma men’s basketball commit who helped lead the PSA Prep team to its fifth National Championship, was presented with the prestigious Head of School’s Award. Ahmed was praised for his leadership, perseverance, and character —both on the court and in the classroom.
The ceremony’s keynote address was delivered by Darrell Simmons Sr., the father of PSA alum Darrell Simmons Jr., who played a key role in three national titles for the Mustangs and now plays for St. Bonaventure. Simmons spoke passionately about the importance of accountability, support systems, and maximizing every opportunity. “This school didn’t just build athletes,” Simmons said. “It built men and women who will shape the future.”
Head of School Donald Cushing, who led the planning and organization of the event alongside Dean of Academics Kevin Donovan, Dean of Students Noah Cerette, and Head Administrative Assistant Donald Cerette, gave the closing remarks.
“The Class of 2025 stands tall as a representation of what Putnam Science Academy is all about: grit, growth, and greatness,” Cushing said. “You leave here not just with knowledge, but with a fire to help others, to change lives, and to make a difference. Go into the world with pride, and always remember your roots here at PSA.”
