PUTNAM — Some of the people attending the 15th annual Fire and Ice Feb. 28 were wearing a sweater. It was nearly 50 degrees. That helped boost the crowds to 30,000-plus.
But for the ice sculpture judges — well they had to hustle.
Organizer Jenn Brytowski said: “What an incredible showcase of talent, creativity and frozen artistry!” She said the entries were “jaw dropping carvings across amateur, group and professional categories.” She also thanked carving competition prize sponsor Xfinity.
Winners:  Amateur Category: 1st Place – Brenden Poe – Eagle (sponsor: Decorative Concrete Solutions); 2nd – Derek May – Peace + Dove (RPC Associates Ron and Donna Coderre); 3rd: Marie Agresta – Dancing Snoopy (Centreville Bank).
Group Category: 1st: Brittni Laguidara and Simone Germain – Phoenix (Wonderland Comics); 2nd: Arrik Kim’s Group – Water Pitcher (Sawmill Pottery & Silver Circle Gallery); 3rd: Powerful Improvements Group – Snoopy (ServiceMaster by Mason).
Professional Category: 1st: Michael Lagassey – Prowling Lion (Alpine Elevator); 2nd: Cody Stisz – Mermaid (Putnam Business Association); 3rd: Lisa Kretchman – Horse w/Flames (KeyBank). Seventy-nine ice blocks/sculptures were signed up.
Brytowski said: “There are no words to describe what transpired at the Fire and Ice Festival. With upwards of 30,000-plus in attendance, not only did everyone seemingly enjoy themselves they also respected the town. The team that drives this event was, by far, the best team I have ever had the pleasure of leading.”
She added: Brytowski said: “This event couldn’t have come at a better time and was much needed. I am hearing rave reviews from all participating establishments both retail and restaurant alike. This is what happens when a community comes together for the greater good. It was indescribable and straight magic from where I sat. I hope everyone who came to town, enjoyed what Putnam has to offer.”
