Boys' roundup
Putnam
player
injured
Last week’s Putnam boys’ basketball loss against Ledyard, 63 - 51, was a bigger loss than expected as Ryan Gunther is on the sidelines with an ACL tear and a sprained knee.
Head coach Shawn Deary said Gunther is a “tough young man” and he expects Gunther will try to come back as soon as he is able. The injury took place during the third quarter of the Jan. 29 game. He is questionable for the Feb. 3 game.
After coming within seven points of the lead, Putnam’s Ryan Gunter went down with a knee injury in the middle of the third. Putnam struggled to find the offensive spark, only scoring nine in the third quarter. Deary said, “When Ryan went down, it took the wind out of our sails. We had just started mounting a come back and Ryan was a big part of our offense in the third, we just struggled to adjust after that,” Deary said.
He said Putnam didn’t play to potential against large division school. While going up in the first quarter by 3, defense went soft in the second quarter with Ledyard outscoring Putnam by 13, he said. Putnam trailed 10 points at the half.
The Clippers came out the second half playing more of their game to hold Ledyard to only 11 third-quarter points.
The fourth quarter was even, both teams scoring 16 points. The Clippers never gave up, keeping the final score to a 12-point difference, Deary said.
Scoring for the Clippers were: Doug Henry with 21, John Abreu with 9, Shane Herlihy with 9 and Matt Daigneault  with 6. Three pointers were Gunter, Herlihy and Abreu.

St. Andrew's 62
By Peter Vitale
THOMPSON—Senior captain Matt Barboza dislocated a finger on the first play of the Jan. 29 game vs. perennial power St. Andrew’s school.  Barboza returned to lead the Golden Knights to a 30-26 halftime lead but turnovers, cold shooting and Barboza’s limited play resulted in a 19 point second half as St. Andrew’s rolled to a 62-49 victory.
“Barboza’s our leader.  He made a valiant effort to return and did his best but he was clearly rattled.  Taking nothing away from St. Andrew’s, but his injury really through us off sync.”  head coach David Vitale said.
Gedas Bertasius led the way for Marianapolis with 21 points. Marianapolis’s next game was Feb. 2 vs. Brimmer & May.  This is a rematch of the 2009 New England Class B Semi Final.

Pomfret School
Pomfret 73
Suffield  91
Pomfret hit the road to take on a very good Suffield team Jan. 27 and fell by the score of 91 - 73. Though the score is lopsided, Pomfret battled to the end. The game was very close in the first half as Pomfret worked hard and executed offensively. Andrew Robinson led the way with 12 first half points and Danny Gagnon chipped in 8 for the half. The score was 22 - 21 Pomfret with about 7 minutes to go, but Suffield hit a barrage of threes and capitalized on turnovers to end the half with a 25 - 8 run.
The second half started in a similar fashion to the way the first one ended and we dug a larger hole going down by 24 at one point. However Pomfret’s second unit took advantage of Suffield’s second unit and chipped away at the lead. Leo Driscoll’s hot shooting and the defense of Miller Staten and Matt Bourdeau saw us cut the lead to about 14. Robinson helped the cause by chipping in 5 second half assists and 4 second half rebounds. Pomfret cut Suffield’s lead to 8 before falling apart on the defensive end of the floor.
Andrew Robinson finished with 18 points, 6 assists and 5 Rebounds. Leo Driscoll scored a season-high 17 points, hitting five three-pointers, four of them in a three-minute stretch to help cut that lead to single digits. Mike Stickles led the team in rebounds for the second straight game as he finished with 9.

Wolfpack - 75
Williams - 63
The Wolfpack continued their unbeatable reign atop the SENE standings, as they moved to 5-0 with a 75-63 win over Williams Jan. 27 in New London. The visitors jumped out to an 13-4 advantage early in the contest, fueled by a 6 quick points from Nas Ibrahim ‘12, who started his first game of the season. The half came to a close with the Wolfpack holding a 43-29 edge behind the efforts of Mike Cannon ‘11 (10 points and 6 rebounds) and Dion Richardson ‘10 (7 points, 5 assists, and 4 steals). Hyde played unselfishly during the first 16 minutes of play, assisting on 13 of 15 field goals.
The comfortable lead allowed the SENE’s first place team to give adequate playing time to all 11 players, with nine successfully reaching the scoring column. Once again, Hyde rounded out their all-around play with numerous scoring sources and contributors. Ibrahim finished 13 points on 6-9 shooting from the floor. Cannon finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 4 steals. Richardson finished with a solid performance, collecting 12 points, 6 assists, and 6 steals, while Craig Levine ‘10 and Jumah Sutton ‘11, tossed in 10 and 11 points, respectively.
The Wolfpack is 8-7 overall.
