PUTNAM --- The Theatre of Northeastern Connecticut at the Bradley Playhouse on Front Street will help banish the mid-winter blahs when it presents "The Foreigner." Larry Shue’s uproariously funny comedy opens March 12 .
Performances are at 8 p.m. March 12, 13, 19 and 20 and at 2 p.m. March 14 and 21. Tickets are $16 for adults and $13 for seniors and students.
When two British friends visit a Georgia fishing lodge, they concoct an outrageous scheme to save shy Charlie from having to make conversation with strangers. Introduced as a “foreigner” who can’t speak English, he overhears scandals, secrets and diabolical plans. Classic confusion ensues as Charlie, who understands perfectly well what is being said, manipulates the villains so good triumphs over evil in the end.
The Foreigner was first produced in Milwaukee in 1983 and opened off Broadway in 1984. Larry Shue’s comedies are distinguished by antic humor, and also include The Nerd and the play for children adapted from the story by Hans Christian Anderson, My Emperor’s New Clothes.
The TNECT production of The Foreigner is directed by Tonya Brock, who is assisted by Nicole Panteleakos and Jessica Green. David Ring’s brilliant performance as Charlie marks his stage debut. He is joined by Bradley newcomers Crystal Stokes as Catherine, the Reverend’s fiancée, and Eric L’Ecuyer who portrays her dull witted brother Ellard. Bradley regulars Scott Guerin as the Reverend David Lee and William Corriveau as Owen define new levels of evil, while Sheila Harrington-Hughes and Paul Neuhardt artfully portray the poor widow Betty and Charlie’s buddy “Froggy” respectively. Adam Greczkowski completes the cast as a townsperson.
Tickets are available at Wonderland Books, 120 Main Street and Victoria Station Café, 91 Main Street, both in Putnam. Reservations may be made with a major credit card online at www.bradleyplayhouse.org, or by calling 860-928-7887. Tickets may also be available at the door. All seating is general admission.
