Pomfret School
The girls' varsity basketball team is the number one seed in the Class “B” Tournament and will host #8 seed Groton March 3 after finishing an amazing week last week.
Pomfret  47   Westminster  24
The girls capped off the season Feb. 27 with a victory over Westminster. It was the seniors’ last regular season home game. Pomfret wasn’t having its best shooting day, but they built a  small lead heading into the half. Kim Derosier penetrated Westminster’s defense while Zenab worked some nice post moves inside. Meg Gaudreau got the outside shots going once entering the game, and Maura and Whitney hit the boards.
The second half was slow to start but picked up momentum as fresh legs rotated through. Alyson Chase displayed some grit fighting for rebounds and getting bloody doing so. Jamie Samociuk got her legs underneath her after a little spell on the sidelines and connected on two shots from the outside. But the highlight of the second half definitely goes to Kevalin Hutachinda who shot 100% today from the floor and who connected on her first three-pointer of the season. Z Hutchins, Caroline Kozlowski, and Meg Calderado continue to be side-lined with injuries, but Pomfret hopes to get them back in this playoff week.
Pomfret 61   St. George  35
St. George’s barsity had the opportunity to see two teams play Feb. 24. In the first half they saw a very average Pomfret squad, one that was okay with settling for quick shots, okay with giving up easy shots, and generally okay with swapping baskets. The score with just a few minutes remaining in the first was tied at 21 until Megan Gaudreau hit a 3 to put the Griffins up by three heading into the half. A lot of credit goes to #5 from St. George’s who had a nose for the basket and finished with 14 first-half points.
The second half was a different mentality and a different team. It all started with a higher level of energy on defense, and just like that, the defense generated offense, and the girls went on a 21-4 run. The energy was contagious as the girls looked to run at every opportunity and ball movement and unselfish play was at its best. While all five girls on the floor led the charge, Jamie Samociuk was at the helm, finishing with 11 second half points and 4 second half assists. Other impressive second half stats were Maura Hall’s 6 assists, Kim Derosier’s 5 defensive rebounds, Tristyn Drake’s up-an-under move baseline move and the made basket, Whitney Willingham’s powerful block and Meg Calderado’s offensive rebound off her own missed shot that she put back up for the easy bucket. The squad of Alyson Chase, Meg Calderado, Kevalin Hutachinda, Caroline Kozlowski and Joddie Iyalehkue finished things nicely.

Marianapolis

Marianapolis  55   Falmouth  40
The Marianapolis varsity girls’ basketball team kept their season going Feb. 26 when they beat Falmouth in the SENE Semifinals. MPS went down early, but never trailed by more than two points as they cruised late to a 55-40 victory and a spot in the SENE Championship Game on Saturday afternoon.
Early on, both teams were making baskets, but senior Helaine Goudreau’s five points were the difference. She tied the score at two apiece in the first minute of the game, and then made a free throw to complete a three-point play and give the Golden Knights a 10-6 lead with 10:55 on the scoreboard. Falmouth would go on a short 6-2 run, and with nine and half minutes remaining in the first half, the score was tied again at 12.
The clock read 8:22 when freshmen Sydney Latour and Becky Stolz entered the game. Their impact was immediate as Stolz found her classmate in the paint. Latour quickly dished out to sophomore Melanie Mills who drained a three-pointer and gave MPS a lead they would not relinquish. On the defensive side, Mills stole the ball and found Latour on the break for the layup and a five-point advantage.
Mills and Latour would each record a block defensively on Falmouth’s next two possessions, but a three-pointer closed the gap to three points with 5:52 left in the first half.
Having just recently been named a NEPSAC All-Star for the 2009-2010 season, A. Stolz would prove why as she took over the game. With 4:18 remaining in the half, she scored her first points on a nice spin move in the paint to give the Knights a 20-14 lead. After Mills grabbed an offensive rebound and scored, Stolz hit a three-pointer to put MPS ahead 25-14.
Latour would score the next two baskets for the home team - the second coming on a great long pass from A. Stolz - and the Knights capped a 17-2 run to lead 29-14.
MPS started the second half right where they left off offensively, but Falmouth appeared to be up to the task. The teams combined for 18 points in the first five minutes, but MPS led 37-25.
Falmouth cut the lead to seven points with 4:50 on the clock, but they could not get closer and MPS held on for the victory. Mills had a team-high 16 points on the day while A. Stolz finished with 14 and Latour scored nine for MPS.
Goudreau’s season-high seven points came at crucial times throughout the game as she played her final home game for the Golden Knights after a four-year career with the program.
Hyde
By Pam Bertschy
Hyde 16  St. Andrew’s 41
Hyde traveled to St. Andrew’s in the quarterfinals of the SENE tournament Feb 24, without success. Hyde and St. Andrews split games in the regular season each game decided by three points or less. The first half was typical of the previous games with hard-fought battles on both ends of the court. St. Andrew’s had a slight edge going into halftime. Halftime seemed to take all the wind out of the Wolfpack’s sails — they were flat and timid while St. Andrew’s came out on a mission. All but two St. Andrew’s players scored while only five of Hyde’s 13 put points on the board. It was a tough way to end a solid season. Stats: Katie Duchesneau ‘10 8 points; Mari Barnett ‘11 4 points; Lexi Burke ‘10, Sabrina Padro ‘10, and Becca Katz ‘11 each had two points.
Hyde 40  Wilbraham and Monson 29
Hyde played Wilbraham in their last regular season game of 2010 Feb. 20. The team was missing some big players but Courtney Gill ‘10 and Katherine Hagood ‘13 filled in the blanks well with strong rebounding and defense. The first half was close as the wolf pack tried to figure out what defense would be most successful against the aggressive Wilbraham team. Ultimately, the decision was made to play zone to make them shoot from the outside and it worked. Hyde went into halftime with a six-point lead. Sabrina Padro ‘10 took over in the second half scoring on drives and from the outside. Lexi Burke ‘10 proved huge in the rebounding department.Stats: Sabrina Padro ‘10 20 points; Lexi Burke ‘10 and Katie Duchesneau ‘10 both with 6 points; Margaret Ann Regnery ‘10 4 points; Katherine Hagood ‘13 2 points; and both Sarah DeNunzio ‘11 and Courtney Gill ‘10 with 1 point.
