Sister Marjorie
Furze, DHS
PUTNAM — Sr. Marjorie Furze, 85, a member of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit, died March 10, 2010, in the Holy Spirit Health Care Center where she had been a resident since 2004.
Sr. Marjorie was born on July 10, 1924 in Fall River, Mass., the daughter of the late Charles and Kathryn (Kennedy) Furze. She entered religious life in 1949 and made her religious profession at the Motherhouse in St. Brieuc, France on August 23, 1951. She was then known as Sr. Catherine de Notre Dame.
She earned an R.N. degree from St. Anne Hospital in Fall River prior to entering in 1949. Her first assignment was in Hartford in 1951 where she ministered to the sick as a visiting nurse. In 1953, she became Head Nurse at the Villa St. Joseph, a home for sick and retired Sisters in Putnam. She became a member of the Provincial Council in 1968 until 1971 all the while continuing her work at the Villa St. Joseph. In 1975, she was assigned as Head Nurse at St. Clare Home in Newport, R.I. She retired to Manchester in 1998 and was assigned to Notre Dame Convent in Putnam in 2003. As her health declined, she then became a patient at Holy Spirit Health Care Center in 2004.
She leaves nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
The Mass of Christian Burial was March 13 in the Holy Spirit Provincial House chapel, with burial at St. Mary Cemetery, Putnam. Donations: Daughters of the Holy Spirit Retirement Fund, 72 Church St., Putnam, CT, 06260. Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam.
Norma Lewis,

THOMPSON — Norma Lewis, 55, of Thompson Road, died March 8, 2010, at home.
She was born in 1954 in Providence, daughter of the late Walter and Eleanor (Whitaker) Tourtellotte. She received an associate’s degree in social work from QVC. Norma was employed for 15 years at Seven Hills Family Services in Worcester, providing home care for special needs individuals. She had made her home in Thompson most of her life, she enjoyed the outdoors, camping and fishing and visiting the ocean.
She leaves her children Kenneth Demers and his wife Tracy of Putnam, Kelly Gould and her husband Joe of Thompson, William Demers of Grosvenordale; sister, Elizabeth Pinrod of Danielson; grandchildren, Codi Demers, Chelsea Demers, Brianna Demers, Kayla Gould, Joe Bo Gould, Isaiah Gould, Lillian Gould, Samantha Demers, Suzanne Demers; and great-grandson, Michael Prunier Jr. She was predeceased by a son, Keith Demers; siblings, Ila Korch and Earl Tourtellotte.
The graveside service was March 14 in Grove Street Cemetery, Putnam. Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove St., Putnam.
Dosina P. Dumas,

N. GROSVENORDALE — Dosina (Messier) Dumas, 84, of Lapiere Road, died March 10, 2010, in the Webster Manor Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Maurice Dumas who died in 2001. Born in 1925 in Holyoke, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Donat and Dosina (St. Jean) Messier.
Mrs. Dumas was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking. She was a communicant of St. Joseph Church in N. Grosvenordale.
Dosina leaves her sons, Maurice Dumas Jr. and his wife Susan of N. Grosvenordale, Daniel Dumas of N. Grosvenordale; daughters, Nancy Chartier and her husband Allen of E. Killingly, Diane Gaumond of North Carolina, and Christine Dumas of Putnam; grandchildren, Michael Dumas, Gwenn Anne Gaumond, Clifford Gaumond, Henry George Davis II, Carrie-Ann Davis, Donald Dumas, and Melissa Frechette and her great-granddaughter, August Frechette. She was predeceased by her son, Donald Dumas; a daughter, Ann Dumas; and a brother, Francis Messier.

Maurice ‘Cubby’
Bernard Renaud
DANIELSON— Maurice (Cubby) Bernard Renaud, 76, of Quinebaug Drive, died March 9, 2010, at home after a short battle with cancer.
He was born March 26, 1933, in E. Brooklyn, the son of the late Leon and Mary Rose Renaud. He was educated in the Killingly Schools District and wed Arlene Guimont of Danielson, on June 2, 1956, at St. James Catholic Church where he was a member for 76 years. Cubby, as he was warmly known by friends and family, enjoyed golfing, wood working, reading, gardening and cooking.
He served with the U.S. Marine Corps 2nd Armored Amphibian Battalion, Camp Lejeune, N.C. from January 1952 to January 1955. He fought in the Korean War from June 1953 to August 1954 where he was promoted to the rank of sergeant and awarded a Purple Heart for wounds he received in action. Prior to his military discharge he was awarded the following medals: Korean Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Presidential Unit Citation, and Good Conduct Medal.
After his military service he worked for a short time with Gilbert Tree Company. Cubby then worked for American Standard from 1958 until his retirement.
He leaves three sons, Richard Renaud of Delta Junction, AK, Gary Renaud of Galloway, N.J., and Dennis Renaud of Danielson; two daughters, Debbie Grippo and Joyce Chenette of Danielson; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Renaud and Marquerite St Jean; a brother Robert Renaud, all of Brooklyn. He was predeceased by siblings Victor, Henry, Omer, Edward, Gerard, and Albert Renaud and Theresa Tavernier, Florence Perreault, and Dolores Nichols.
The Funeral Mass was March 13 at St, James Catholic Church, with burial with military honors in Holy Cross Cemetery, Danielson. Donations: St. James Catholic Church, 12 Franklin St., Danielson, CT 06239. Gagnon and Costello Funeral Home, 33 Reynolds St., Danielson.
Joyce A. Guilmart,

WEBSTER — Joyce (Fisher) Guilmart, 68, of Pontiac Avenue, died March 8, 2010, in Oakwood Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Born in 1942 in Meriden, she was the daughter of the late Felix and Theresa (Schimpf) Fisher. Ms. Guilmart worked as a housekeeper for the Town of Thompson. She was a member of the United Methodist church in Thompson.
She leaves her son, Steven Guilmart Jr. of N. Grosvenordale; close cousin, Elizabeth Walsh of Rhode Island.

Leon Van Flatern,

N. GROSVENORDALE — Leon Van Flatern, 92 of Wilsonville Road, died March 10, 2010, at the Villa Maria Nursing Home, Plainfield. He was the husband of the late Eva (Bazinet) Van Flatern; she died June 10, 1999. He was born Oct. 18, 1917, in Putnam, son of the late Alphonsus and Mary (Bousquet) Van Flatern.
He was a veteran of WWII Serving with the U.S. Army. He had worked for many years of Stevens Linens and Anglo Fabrics in Webster, as a weaver and supervisor. He had made his home in N. Grosvenordale for over 45 years. Leon enjoyed working outside in his yard.
He leaves his son, Leonard A. Van Flatern and his wife June of Brooklyn; a daughter, Carol A. Dauphinais and her husband Leonell of Canterbury; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Katherine Macdonald
YARMOUTH, Maine --- Katherine Macdonald, 87, of Yarmouth, on March 4, 2010. The daughter of Arthur Souls and Katherine Cameron Macdonald of Putnam, Professor Macdonald received her bachelor's degree from The Bouve-Boston School of Physical Education, Tufts University (now Northeastern University). After teaching at Abbot Academy in Andover, Mass., she went on to complete a master’s degree and was a teacher and coach in Virginia.
Kay’s travels covered a good part of the globe, with considerable time in the British Isles. Always a champion of the underdog, her worldwide view led to many years of active involvement on behalf of Amnesty International, USA.
For some time after retirement, Kay lived in Fayetteville, Penn., then moved to The Highlands in Topsham, Maine.
She leaves two cousins, Sarah Wright of Sugarland, Texas, and Joan Roberts of Baddeck, Nova Scotia
The Memorial Service will be at 2 p.m. April 27 in The Memorial Chapel at Sweet Briar College.
