Standing at five feet and seven inches, Orhan Sultanov is the shortest player in Putnam Science Academy basketball history. The senior from Brooklyn, N.Y., is usually the smallest player on the court, but has the biggest heart.
“I wasn’t given much athletic ability so I always had to work harder than anyone else. ”
Orhan currently holds the PSA record for most games played and is the only player in school history to be part of the varsity basketball program for four years. He is in the top-10 on both the all-time scoring list and most three-point shots. Orhan is humble about his achievements and wants to be remembered for being a team player and hard worker.
“I’m a very confident person and love challenges, said Orhan. “Everyday has been a challenge for me to earn playing time, but I still feel like I lead by example for this team.”
Orhan is recognized as a fan favorite around the community. He is small in stature but large in personality. He participates in numerous events and programs in the area.  Orhan can also found on Saturday nights spreading his charm at Victoria’s Station.
After graduation from PSA in May, Orhan plans on attending college near his hometown of New York City.  Although his playing days are over, he wouldn’t change anything. “I enjoyed every second I had playing on the basketball court here at PSA.  I played as hard as I could and didn’t hold anything back”
Orhan is not sure what he will study in college, but he credits coach Thomas Espinosa for installing a strong work ethic in him.  “Coach expects a lot from his players and always wants maximum effort.  I might not have been the best player but coach played me because he knew I would outwork anyone.”
Espinosa knows he is losing a leader next year.  “Orhan is going to be missed next year.  He was a strong leader off the court, keeping all the players informed and organized.  He was always there when I needed him.”
