Pomfret 10 KO 7
The varsity softball team improved their record to 4-1 with a 10-7 win at home April 21 against Kingswood-Oxford.
The Griffins jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Ashley Anctil walked, went to third on Sam Slotnick’s double, and scored on Maura Hall’s fly out to right. After a walk to Katie Peverada, Tristyn Drake drove Slotnick home with a single up the middle. Tristyn moved up on Hallie O’Connor’s infield single, and then scored when Sam Humes got a base hit to center. The lead grew to 6-0 two innings later, when Peverada walked, Drake doubled, and they both came around on Sarah Steinke’s single to right.
Kingswood got on the board with two runs in the top of the fourth, but Pomfret extended the lead to 10-2 in the bottom of the inning. Sam Humes and Jaimie Leonoff led off with singles. Sam scored on an overthrow after Ashley Anctil hit into a fielder’s choice. Then, after Sam Slotnick walked to load the bases, Maura Hall emptied them with a three-run double to left center. Kingswood threatened again in the last inning when they scored four runs courtesy of a couple of errors and a home run. They then got two more hits to bring the tying run to the plate with only one out. As an answer to this, pitcher Meg Gaudreau retired the next batter on a soft grounder back to the mound, and Ashley Anctil ended the game by catching a slow liner to second base.
Pomfret 9 Marianapolis 3
The varsity softball team took a short trip to Marianapolis April 24 and came home with a solid 9-3 victory. Marianapolis grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Griffins tied things up right away in the top of the second. Hallie O’Connor singled with one out and moved to third on a double by Sam Humes. Amy Diaz then brought them both in with a double to the right centerfield gap.
After Marianapolis took a 3-2 lead in the third, Pomfret again counterpunched, this time plating three runs in the top of the fourth to go up 5-3 and move ahead for good. O’Connor and Humes led off with singles, and then Kim Derosier’s infield hit loaded the bases. Ashley Anctil drove them all home with a double to deep centerfield, but was out trying to stretch it to a triple.
Pomfret extended its lead to 7-3 in the fifth, as O’Connor and Humes drove in Katie Peverada and Tristyn Drake. In the sixth, Pomfret picked up its final two runs on a single by Sam Slotnick, a Maura Hall double, and a Peverada single.
Meanwhile, the Pomfret defense was solid once again, with shortstop Peverada making a couple of great throws off the backhand, first baseman Hall diving to snare a soft liner, and Sarah Steinke and Ashley Anctil alertly picking off a Marianapolis hitter who wandered too far past second base after a drive to the outfield. These plays all came in support of Tristyn Drake, who pitched in Meg Gaudreau’s absence and had a great debut. Tristyn allowed only six hits all afternoon and recorded five strikeouts.
Pomfret 7 Cushing 13
In girls’ lacrosse, the girls faced another tough loss April 21 in their game against Cushing. With a strong start in the first half, the Griffins found themselves at a small deficit at halftime with a score of 5 - 7. They continued their efforts well into the second half, and possessed the ball for over half of the time on the field. However, despite their hard work and intensity, they had a hard time finding the back of the net. The transition throughout the midfield continues to improve for the girls as they connect their passes and as the attackers work on re-defending the ball. Nelle Herrick showed a strong perspective of the field today and was a solid force in our defense. Izzy Regine played tirelessly against Cushing’s top scorer and helped to slow the momentum of the opposing attack.
Dejda Collins was again a strong support for our defense with a saving average of 46 percent. She continues to visibly improve everyday and has kept us in the game a number of times. Caroline Brown scored three goals in today’s game, while Brooke Bytalan had two, Ceci Hayssen and Allie Bohan each had 1, and Kayla Sheehan came out with an assist.
Pomfret 7 Kent 19
The Griffins faced a rough game as they traveled to Kent last weekend. Fighting midterm exhaustion, the girls started off stiff and did not display the fight and togetherness that they have greatly developed this season, as seen in the games leading up to Saturday. Despite frustration spreading across the field and sidelines, the girls were able to band together and put forward a better effort in the second half. Unfortunately, finding themselves once again in the hole after the first 25 min, they were unable to come back fully in the second half.
Players who put out a remarkable amount of effort and determination during this game were Captain Kayla Sheehan who controlled play in the midfield, Brooke Bytalan’s drives and goal in the attack and work in defense, Caroline Brown leading the team with draw controls and scoring one goal, Andi Nicholson and Melissa Haganey had the most interceptions this game and helped slow down the opposing transition, and Dejda Collins who once again kept us in the game due to her endless fight in goal. On the attack, Dana Halsey put in two while Ceci Hayssen, Allie Bohan and Melissa Haganey each added one goal for Pomfret.
Baseball
Pomfret 3 Williston 6
The Pomfret Griffins traveled to Williston April 24 looking to split the season series with division rival Williston Northampton. Ten days ago, when Pomfret hosted Williston, Pomfret had trouble pinching off the opponent’s rallies and was error-prone. Today, your Griffins played smart and tight baseball behind junior David St. Lawrence, who pitched 5 and 2/3 solid innings, striking out 7 Wildcats and issuing 4 walks. Timely two-out hitting by Williston and excellent base-running led to Wildcat runs in each of the first three innings. Two insurance runs in the sixth came on a sacrifice fly and a throwing error on a play at the plate. The Pomfret bats generated hard-hit balls that invariably found Williston gloves, and when pressed to make plays Williston came through in the clutch. Trailing 0-4 entering the sixth inning, the Griffins generated a 3-run rally with two outs. Extended at-bats and walks helped to fill the bases, while singles by St. Lawrence (3-4), Connor Quinn (2-3; 2 RBI) (’11), and Dan Gagnon (1-3; 1 RBI) (’11) helped to push three runners across. Pomfret left the bases loaded in the sixth but threatened again in the seventh. Ray Zeek’s (’11) liner to right with two on and two outs was snagged by a sliding Ryan Smith of Williston to end the game in dramatic fashion. The Griffins are now 3-4 .
