Centaurs
win 2
out of 3
The Woodstock Academy softball team finished the week 2-1, with wins over Old Lyme and East Lyme and a loss to the current number-one ranked team in the state, Waterford.
April 26, Old Lyme scored a run in the first inning, before Samantha Boyle tied things up in the second with a solo homerun that left Weimann Field at the Bentley Complex.  It was the first homerun for Boyle.  Old Lyme again took the lead in the fifth, when freshman Adelis Concepcion momentarily struggled with her control, walking three batters in the inning.
The Centaurs went in to the sixth needing runs and they got them.  Justina Thoma led off with a single, Julia Oleksy reached on a fielder’s choice, Boyle walked, and Concepcion came through with a hard single scoring both runners.  Kristin Kozey, running for Concepcion, added an insurance run when the catcher dropped the throw on her successful steal of home.  Concepcion got two ground balls to short and a strikeout to close things out in the top of the seventy.  The Centaurs improved to 3-4 with the win.
April 27, the Centaurs traveled to East Lyme to take on the Vikings.  The Centaurs jumped on East Lyme early, scoring three in the first inning.  Jess Little singled, Chelsea Gosselin walked, Justina Thoma reached on a fielder’s choice, removing Little, Julia Oleksy then singled to load the bases.  Boyle sacrificed the first run home and then with two outs, freshman Concepcion provided a double-scoring two runs.  The game was tied at four in the fifth when Boyle provided the big blow, coming to the plate with runners on second and third and none out, she drove the ball over the fence for a three-run homer.  It was the second homer in two days for the junior.  Head coach of the Centaurs, David Walley, was surprised by the power shown by Boyle, “Samantha is a strong girl, but has never hit a HR in practice, so this was a surprise.  She is hitting the ball very well these past two days.  She gave us a huge lift.”  East Lyme would make things interesting in the seventh when some walks and defensive miscues by the Centaurs would allow for two runs to score.  Concepcion was able to record a strikeout to get the third out and preserve the 8-6 victory.  “Adelis is doing a fantastic job, and it was a great start to the week for us getting two important wins.” added Walley.
April 29, Woodstock faced Waterford, a team that had just been ranked number one in the New Haven Register poll.  Waterford jumped on the Centaurs immediately scoring four in the first and never looking back.  They scored five in the fifth, two in the sixth, and an additional five in the seventh.  WA could muster only four hits and could only sit back and take the 16-0 drubbing.  One bright spot, Walley pointed out, was the OF play of freshman Danielle Faries and Vanessa Valenti, and sophomore Chelsea Gosselin, “They were certainly being tested often and they did a great job out there.  All of them are playing varsity for the first time and are making gains each day.”  “Waterford is an exceptional team, I hoped we could play them closer, it just shows we have alot of work to do,” added Walley.  The loss left the Centaurs at 4-5 overall, with games coming up against Ledyard, Montville, and Fitch this week.
