tough week
Last week was a tough one for the Woodstock Academy softball team. The Centaurs dropped to 4-8 overall with losses to Ledyard, Montville, and Fitch.
The Centaurs played Ledyard May 3 and came away with a 2-0 loss. Ledyard pitcher Jenny Forster scattered three hits and got the victory. Justina Thoma hit the ball well for the Centaurs, going 2-3 with two hard hit doubles, but the home team could muster little else against the Colonels. “We came out very flat, Forster threw well, but did not seem to be throwing anything special. I was surprised we struggled so much against her.” said head coach David Walley, “It is disappointing because this is a game we could have won.”
May 5, the Academy played Montville and the offense was back; however, the defense and pitching struggled and they fell short to the Indians, 12-11. Two singled, two batters hit by pitches, and two walks, led to a 3-0 lead for Montville after one inning. The Centaurs were able to plate two in the second, with singles from Hannah Neill and Rochelle Graveline.
From there it was back and forth all day, Woodstock taking the lead and Montville tying it up. Three errors by Woodstock in the bottom of the sixth and a double allowed Montville to tie the score at 10. The Centaurs failed to score in the top of the seventh and then Montville, led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple and scored on an infield hit to win the game.
Chelsea Gosselin had two hits for the Centaurs and Justina Thoma had three singles.
“This was a tough loss to swallow. We beat this team 5-2 in the opener and unfortunately did not play well today,” said Walley. “We are in a stretch right now where we are not hitting the ball particularly well, making some errors in the field, and our pitchers are allowing too many baserunners. Obviously that is not a winning combination.”
May 7 the Centaurs played Fitch and was beaten handily by a superior team. Four walks, a hit batswoman, and two hits led Fitch to a five-run second inning and the Falcons never looked back. They scored in every inning after the first and went on to a 14-0 win. Haley Cooper surrendered only one hit and struck out seven for the game.
“This has been a tough week for us. My hope is that we can get things turned around and still make the State tournament, but that will be very difficult at this point,” said Walley. “This week we missed some opportunities to get wins and have left ourselves no margin for error the rest of the way.”
This week does not get any easier as the Centaurs battle Tourtellotte, NFA, and Bacon Academy.
