E. WOODSTOCK --- Three Woodstock Explorers from the Muddy Brook fire station graduated from the Connecticut fire academy this summer.
Jonathan Bastien, 17, Dylan Hamill, 14, and Holly Phaneuf, 15, were chosen by the Connecticut Fire Academy to attend a week of cadet training in Windsor Locks. The academy is a state-of-the-art fire training facility that increases Explorers' knowledge on skills such as fire department organization and structure, fire science, ropes and knots, ladders, fire streams, search and rescue and wildfire firefighting.
The Woodstock cadets learned to work as a team in a paramilitary setting and learned new skills in the classroom. They put those skills to use in mock firefighting situations. During commencement the cadets demonstrated all they had learned.
Bastien said, "I loved controlling the ladder from the back of the fire truck that concentrated on the higher points of the structure."
Hamill said, "I enjoyed learning how to climb ladders" and Phaneuf said, "I loved being with all the kids that shared the same interests."
The Muddy Brook Fire Department has an Explorer program that is open to teens ages 14 to 18 who are interested in fire safety training and being an intricate part of the community.
