Edward W. Bishop,
WWII vet
EASTFORD — Edward W. Bishop was born on March 9, 1923 in Bridgeport. He was working at the Singer Manufacturing Company when he was drafted in 1943. Classified and assigned to the U.S. Army Air Corps as a navigator of B-24 aircraft, he flew over 25 missions out of England. His active duty ended in 1945, after which he enrolled at UConn on the G.I. Bill. There he studied psychology and met his wife of 56 years at a basketball game. He graduated with honors from UConn in 1950. He was married to Mary (Betty) Roper of Moosup in August, 1951 and shortly thereafter was recalled from the Reserves to serve in the Korean War as a B-29 navigator. He flew over two dozen missions and ended his service as a decorated first lieutenant in 1953. In 2008, he was honored for service to his country at a Memorial Day ceremony in Eastford.
“Bish,” as he was known to most, became a lifelong employee of Dunlap and Associates, the human factors engineering company of which he was vice president. He lived for many years in Darien. He served on the Darien Board of Education and was an active church member. After retirement, he and Betty settled at their beloved cottage on Crystal Pond in Eastford. His family and friends remember him for his gentlemanly manner, his wealth of knowledge on a variety of subjects, and his quick, dry sense of humor. He enjoyed photography throughout his life and left archives of thousands of slides, prints, and movies of family and friends.
He suffered from dementia later in life, and died at the age of 87 Oct. 2, 2010, after a brief respiratory illness. Bish was predeceased by his wife; a brother, Kenneth, and a sister, Dorothy (Scheibel). He leaves a sister, Mildred Barr of Zephyrhills, Fla.; a brother, James, of Woodbridge; son, Charles Bishop (Therese Milesi) of Syracuse, N.Y.; daughter, Meg Bishop (Felix Klee) and their children, Emily Klee, Alena Klee, and Elizabeth Bishop of Eastford.
A Memorial Service was Oct. 6 at the First Congregational Church of Woodstock, with burial in Cemetery, Eastford. Marillyn B. Mayer,

WOODSTOCK — Marillyn B. Mayer, of Laurel Drive died Oct. 5, 2010, at Westview Health Care Center in Dayville. She was the wife of the late Henry Mayer.
Born Dec. 11, 1924, in North Platte, Neb., daughter of Fred E. and Fern (Hall) Bailey. She made her home in Woodstock most of her life.
She leaves her daughter, Tia Mayer and her husband Michael Weinfeld of Herndon, Va.; granddaughter Anikka Weinfeld of Colorado; nephew Randy Bailey (Barbara) and their daughter Michelle of Colorado.

Bertha L. Moffitt,

BROOKLYN — Bertha L. Moffitt, 85, of Darby Road, Brooklyn, died Oct. 7, 2010, at Pierce Memorial Baptist Home. She was the wife of Norman Hubert. They were married Feb. 16, 1946, in St. Mary’s Church, Baltic. He died Aug. 24, 1967. She married Charles Moffitt Sr., August of 1977, and he died Oct. 7, 1983.
She was born Sept. 5, 1925, in Baltic, daughter of the late Felix and Louise (St. Germain) Provencher.
She attended local schools including Norwich Free Academy. She worked at the former Baltic Mills. After moving she worked in textile mills and her final employment was at Superwinch Corp. in Putnam. She was a member of the Plainfield Senior Citizens, enjoyed crocheting, knitting, was an avid Red Sox Fan, a communicant of St. James Church.
She leaves a son: Michael Hubert of Jewett City; a daughter: Kathleen Radel (William) of Brooklyn; sister, Jeannette Daigneault of Canterbury; grandchildren: Jarrad Pechie, Justin Pechie, Jamie Pechie; step-grandchildren, Jonelle Radel and Donald Radel. She was predeceased by a brother, Andre Provencher; sisters, Doris Propster and Rachel Trahan.

DANIELSON — Danielle R. (Hurder) Shaffer, 46, of Westcott Road, died Oct. 5, 2010, at home.
She was born in Hartford, daughter of Madeline (Schemelder) Hurder Betzner of Kerriville, Texas, and the late Daniel Hurder. She was formerly employed as a receptionist for Day Kimball Hospital Therapy Department in Plainfield.
She always had a song in her heart. She loved everything about music: singing like nobody’s business and dancing with spot-on rhythm. She leaves her husband, Thomas A. Shaffer of Danielson; two sons, Aaron Faucher of Hartford, and Joshua Faucher of Bristol; daughter, Paige Shaffer of Danielson; four sisters, Faith Mogan of Belgrade Lake, Maine, Lynette Faucher of Salisbury, Kate Phillips and Heidi Hurder both of Phoenix. Margaret Alderson
McKechnie Mushero
WOODSTOCK — Margaret Mushero, 83, of Woodstock, died Oct. 4, 2010, at home. Marge was born Feb. 14, 1927, in West Haven, daughter of Mary Wood Brownell and Edward Alderson.
She served as Past Worthy Advisor, for the W. Haven Assemble and Past Grand Worth Associate Advisor for the State of CT Assembly of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls. She graduated from West Haven High School in 1944.
Marge married George S. McKechnie in 1952. She worked for United Illuminating and for in the West Haven Tax Office.
With their four children they moved to Pomfret in 1969 and then to Woodstock in 1976. Margaret worked as the outpatient registrar at Day Kimball Hospital from 1970 until her retirement in 1989.
After her retirement Marge became an active member of the hospital’s volunteer staff, where she served until last year. Margaret married Hollis Mushero in 1988 and they lived in Woodstock during the summer and wintered in Palm Harbor, Fla. Marge was active in her retirement, traveling, golfing, bowling.
She leaves four children, 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild: David McKechnie of Asmera, Eritrea (Kathy) and his children Conor and Haleigh; Nancy Ager (Robert) of Waterford and her children Robert, Lindsay and Nicole and Lindsay’s daughter Reese; Paul McKechnie of Hamden, and his children Peyton, Caroline and Mariah; and Susan McKechnie of Woodstock and her daughters Megan and Avery. Margaret was predeceased by her brother Charles Brownell, her first husband George McKechnie and Hollis Mushero.
