The NECONN Boys’ U12 Soccer team ended their season with a solid 4-1 victory over Hebron Nov. 7. Both teams played to a stalemate until the midway point in the first half when NECONN’s Sam Paul took a ball down the right side into the Hebron end of the field. Sam was able to cross the ball to the top of the box where Chris Walker laced a solid instep into the top left corner. Up 1-0 NECONN continued to put pressure on the Hebron defense; forwards Zach Gagnon and Elijah Dufour created multiple turnovers. With eight minutes remaining in the half, it was Evan Cunningham who intercepted a Hebron clearing attempt at midfield and immediately laid off a through ball to Max Paro. Max saw a clear line to the goal and one-timed Evan’s pass into the back of the net to give the home team a 2-0 lead going into the half. NECONN goalie Alexander Frankhouser recorded the shutout in the first frame.
In the second half, Chris Walker took over the goaltending duties for NECONN and was immediately tested. Despite the good defensive efforts of Connor Fillmore, Alec Nystrom and Cal Wilcox, Hebron created a turnover at the top of the NECONN box and made good on a perfectly placed, top corner shot that Walker had no chance on. With the lead cut in half, Jack Liggett and David Redfield worked hard to create the next break for NECONN. That break came when Sam Paul sent Evan Cunningham in alone behind the Hebron defense. Evan out-ran the Hebron goalie to the ball and emphatically found the back of the net. To seal the victory, with three minutes left on the clock, William Liscomb chipped a perfectly placed ball into the Hebron box. Max Paro ran under the ball and on one bounce volleyed it past the diving keeper. The 4-1 victory ended NECONN’s season on a good note and brought their record to 4-5-1 and a fourth-place finish in the six-team, Division 3, Northeast District League.
