Pomfret 7   Marianapolis 0
Nov. 3: The girls’ varsity soccer team traveled across town to face Marianapolis and came away with a 7-0 win.  Caroline Kozlowski and Andi Nicholson played a role in 6 of the 7 goals, Caroline finishing with 1 goal and 4 assists, and Andi finishing with 2 goals.  Pomfret dominated possession from the opening whistle and got on the board from a great shot from Alison Horst assisted by Caroline to put the Griffins up 1-0.  Despite a season high of 24 shots in the first half, Pomfret went into the half only up by one.  The team regrouped at the half, determined to be more efficient in the final third and opened the second half with three goals in the first 10 minutes, the first from Caroline (unassisted) and the next two from Andi (assisted by Caroline & Liv Dalton-Hoffman). Jamie Samociuk got the fifth goal after a scramble in the box and Izzy Regine earned the sixth tally after she ripped a far post ball past the keeper from just inside the box.  The final goal was a beautiful combination from Caroline who served a floater into the box where Alison Chase was waiting to head it home, for her first goal of the season. It was a great second half surge by the Griffins with everyone contributing. Mackenzie Dunphy earned the shutout but did not record any saves on the day.  Pomfret moves to 10-3-2 and will host Suffield on Saturday at 3:15.
Volleyball
Pomfret 2 Suffield 0
Nov. 3: The girls’ volleyball team entered the gym with one very clearly established goal; to give each of the two games ahead of them everything they had.  Knowing that both Exeter and Suffield are both formidable opponents (probably the toughest two this season), proved the proper inspiration for an excellent day of game play.  In the double header schedule the girls knew that each game could be anybody’s.  The games are played best of three in these scenarios instead of best of five and so a quick win was the safest bet.  With Suffield up first, and a  bit late to the game, the Griffins had plenty of time to warm up and get pumped.  Clearly, the extra time was a blessing, because (though not right out of the gate) even from the first game, Pomfret showed their desire to play hard.  Winning over Suffield in two games would be the pride booster that they wanted in order to take on Class A Exeter and to avenge the loss they suffered to them last season.  The girls achieved the win in two, as planned, with determined game play and well-executed passing, setting, hitting, and serving.

Pomfret 2  Exeter 0
Nov. 3: Avenging their 2009 season loss to Exeter and winning against a Class A powerhouse were two clear motivating factors for the Griffins. In front of a tremendously supportive crowd, the girls pumped up their game and played with grace and determination.  This game is a clear example (at least the first and third games) of what this team is truly capable of when all of the girls are running at full potential at the same time.  With everyone playing their top game and their hearts out on the court, the Griffins managed to put Exeter on the defense.  Once again relying on a tremendous team effort, the girls pulled together for the win and, especially in the third game, truly powered through this one.  Though nerve-wracking and highly emotional, the girls proved they are ready for the upcoming formidable opponents by handling both Exeter and Suffield so well. Smart game play all around showed the girls beginning to strategize for the best offensive plans; not just hitting every ball as hard as they could, but truly seeing the defense as they lined up to hit.
Scores: 25-20, 17-25, 15-4
Top performers: Brittany Dingler (Senior): 5 kills, 4 blocks; Caroline Brown (Senior): 5 kill, 3 aces; Sophie Rathjen (Senior): 9 kill, 3 blocks; Ashley Newhall (Senior): 13 assists; Anyolina Montilla (Senior): 2 kills, 1 block, 2 aces.

Hyde
Varsity Soccer
Hyde 2 St. Andrews 2
Nov. 1: On a frigid fall afternoon, the Hyde School girls’ varsity soccer team played an outstanding game against St. Andrew’s School at home.  While the score remained tied, the WolfPack dominated play, ending the game disappointed in the scoreboard, but excited about the elevated level of play.
From the opening whistle, it was clear that the Hyde team had shown up to play and win.  The ball was moved well through the midfield, kept to the flank, and played beautifully into the goal mouth over and over.  Marcy Altobello ’13 lead much of this play, as she charged down the left sideline, pushing a great ball through to Andrea Sayegh ’12, who took on her defender.  Earning a corner kick, Bryn Nolan ’12 sent a beautiful ball into the goal mouth which Sayegh drilled toward the goal off her head.  Though the goalie made the initial save, Sayegh followed up her attack, gathering the rebound to earn her first goal of the season just nine minutes into the game.  Though Hyde maintained complete control of the game, St. Andrew’s earned a counterattack 10 minutes later, catching the WolfPack defense off guard.  Though the defense balanced well, St. Andrew’s got a shot off just inside the 18-yard box, barely trickling into the goal, yet evening the score.  With the half time score tied, Hyde’s 11-2 shot advantage propelled them to up the play even more for the second half.
The second half, again, was all Hyde.  With great ball movement and communication, the WolfPack attacked the St. Andrew’s goal again and again.  Hyde was finally able to capitalize ten minutes into the half when Rianna Arellano ’12 sent a beautiful through ball toNolan, who touched the ball to the inside of her defender then drilled it into the back of the net to give Hyde back the lead.  Seconds later, it looked as though Hyde would increase its lead when Arellano intercepted the St. Andrew’s kick off, carried the ball through several defenders, and drilled the ball at the net, only to graze the post.  This would be Hyde’s luck for the remainder of the game, though the level of play never dropped.  Unfortunately, ten minutes after Hyde reclaimed the lead, a St. Andrew’s cross brushed the arm of a Hyde defender, which was awarded as a penalty kick.  Though they capitalized on the opportunity, it seemed over and over that Hyde would enable the scoreboard to reflect the play on the field.  Even outshooting the opponent 25-2, the WolfPack could not earn the advantage the team deserved.
Hyde saw fantastic play from Mari Barnett ’11, Aine Zaniewski ’13, Altobello, and Arellano in the midfield, Nolan and Sayeghon offense, and Becca Katz ’12, Camryn Bindra ’13, Hope Eldridge ’11, and Caitlyn Colley ’11 on defense.
