POMFRET --- Recently the Komen Connecticut Ride for the Cure® returned to Tyrone Farm in Pomfret for a record-breaking 10th year to raise money in support of the local fight against breast cancer.
The Ride, an event for equestrian enthusiasts, marked its anniversary with its largest turnout and fundraising milestone to date. More than 130 riders, many of them survivors, raised over $110,000 for the Connecticut Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Since its inception in 2001, the scenic, 8.5-mile equestrian trail ride has raised over $617,000 for the local organization.
Each rider was asked to raise $250 to participate, committing significant funds to Connecticut’s fight against breast cancer. Many of the riders exceeded this amount, including the 18 Riders who raised over $1,000 and the event’s top fundraiser, Rebecca Wentworth, who raised over $8,000 for the cause.
In addition to their aptitude for fundraising, each rider possesses tremendous passion and a strong bond with their horses. For the riders who are also breast cancer survivors, this bond was what helped many of them through their illnesses.
Anne Morris, Komen Connecticut’s executive director, joined the riders for a fun-filled day, even getting on horseback herself. “Three thousand Connecticut women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year,” Morris said. “Life is never the same after a diagnosis – you’re always haunted by the fact that your breast cancer may return someday. We’re riding to make sure that no more of our daughters, mothers, sisters and friends have to hear those dreaded words.”
Until we find the cures for breast cancer, women and their families need access to the education and screening services that are essential to detecting the disease in its early stages. Komen Connecticut will invest seventy-five percent of net proceeds from the Ride in local education, screening and treatment programs throughout the state. The remaining 25 percent will support national research initiatives.
