PUTNAM --- Sleepy's last weekend made some changes to its northeast Connecticut lineup.
The Sleepy's mattress store in the Putnam Parkade, near Stop & Shop, on Route 44 was closed. A sign in the window said the store had moved in with the Sleepy's store in the Killingly Crossing mall in Dayville off Route 101 in Dayville.
However, the Better Bedding store, shuttered for more than a year when Better Bedding Shops Inc. filed for bankruptcy, reopened with mattresses for sale. That store is next to Tractor Supply, on Route 44, very near the Putnam Parkade.
Better Bedding, which had opened Putnam store in February, 2008, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March 2009. The company had proposed to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court a reorganization plan that would have taken three years to repay its unsecured creditors.
But the unsecured creditors committee, according to trade reports, instead backed an offer from Sleepy's for $965,000. The sale went through in May.
Tom Wholley, the Better Bedding vice president, said that Sleepy's retains the Better Bedding name. He added that his family has no input, no ownership of the Better Bedding name.
Sleepy's operates more than 700 stores in 13 states.
