Hyde 71 Gann 62
Jan. 7: The Hyde Wolfpack started off the new year by traveling to Gann to face them once again. The game started off fast and Hyde took an early advantage, making their first four shots taking the early lead. Chad Bryant ’12 started the game off by hitting a three right as the shot clock expired. Hyde never looked back after that. Hyde quickly pulled ahead and dominated the first half in scoring, assists, and rebounding. At Halftime the score was Hyde 36, Gann 23. The second half was not much different than the first. With about five minutes left Hyde had a 21 point lead. Gann didn’t give up, they regrouped and looked as though they would make a comeback, but fell short.
Mike Cannon ’11 had a big game scoring 18 points, and grabbing 5 rebounds. Jalen Hill ’11showed his versatility once again with 19 rebounds, and 16 points. Jahvaney Beckford ’12 scored 14 points, and also had many assists. Chad Bryant came through with some huge buckets to start the game off on the right track, he had 11 points, 7 in the first 2 minutes.
Pomfret School
Varsity Basketball
Pomfret 58 Taft 67
Jan. 5: Pomfret’s Jekyll and Hyde ways of the season continued Dec. 5 vs. Taft as they played a great first half of basketball only to fall apart in the second half. This was the third time this season that they took a lead into the locker room only to return and play a poor second half. Defensively in the first half Pomfret limited Taft to just 23 points while scoring 31 points and playing solid team-driven offensive basketball.
Unfortunately as the second half came Pomfret seemed to forget about team play and looked for individual accomplishment. It seems to be less about selfishness and more about a lack of trust of one another. There was a lot more one-on-one play and stagnant offensive play and lackluster defensive hustle. Pomfret forgot to box-out and only mustered six second-half defensive rebounds after grabbing 16 in the first half. Pomfret was outscored by 17 in the second half and winded up losing 58 - 67.
Highlights of the game were the good team play of the first half, the hustle of Jack Nicholson and the overall play in limited time of Ben Sukonic, and an athletic put-back dunk from Kahari Beaufort towards the end of the first half. (Unfortunately it was just two points) Danny Metzgar also impressed with his poise and aggressive, selfless, and smart play.Beaufort led in scoring, rebounding, assists, and turnovers with 16 and 9, 4, and 5 respectively, while Andrew Robinson grabbed a season-high 7 rebounds and Nic Lane scored 15 points.
Varsity Ice Hockey
Pomfret 7 Deerfield 3
Jan. 5: Goaded by the good-natured “Go Big Green” comment from Deerfield alumnus – and perspicacious English Department Chair – S. Mitchell Pinkowski in the lunch line, the Griffins earned a big win over Deerfield Academy at Jahn Rink. The Griffins attacked Deerfield’s zone early and often to start the first, with Connor Quinn ’11 tallying early on, burying the rebound of a Nick Bennett ’12 shot to put the Griffins up 1-0. Four minutes later, Pomfret pulled ahead to 2-0 with a Brian Miller ‘12 goal. A strong penalty kill further sparked Pomfret as they thwarted Deerfield opportunities and transitioned quickly to the attack. The efforts culminated in a score when Captain Danny Palumbo ’11 made it 3-0 for the Griffins with just a minute left in the frame.
Before the second period, the team echoed that the effort of the first had to be repeated. Hoping to put away the game early in the second, so as to shake off any chance of a Deerfield rally, the Griffins were taken aback as Deerfield, determined to force the play into Pomfret’s zone, notched a goal three minutes in, making the game 3-1. A strong effort from the Deerfield skaters forced Goalie Nick Ellis ‘13 to stop numerous quality opportunities. A key blocked shot by Palumbo off a defensive zone face-off, deft puckhandling by Evan Hoffman ’11, and a high-end finish by Miller with a minute remaining in the second to put the Griffins up 4-1. Miller’s second score, which swung the momentum back in Pomfret’s favor, would turn out to the game-winner.
The Griffins hit the ice in the third determined again to outwork and outplay their opponents. Pomfret efficiently killed the first penalty of the period, and a game misconduct to a Deerfield player gave Pomfret a five-minute powerplay. Eager to capitalize, Palumbo soon scored his second of the game to make it a 5-1. Assistant Captain Ray Zeek ’11 scored a minute later, and Pomfret’s man-advantage expired with a 6-1 lead in hand. Deerfield scored with two minutes remaining to make it 6-2. With fifty-one seconds left on the clock, Ray Zeek ’11 scored a goal from his stomach as the puck flew across the crease, making it three players to notch two goals, and the third time that Pomfret would score in the final minute of a period. The effort was incomplete to close out the game soundly, however, as Pomfret spotted Deerfield a third goal with less than 30 seconds remaining. The game ended 7-3. Before continuing the “Hip-Hip-Hooray” tradition, the team spoke about the importance of finishing out games to ensure victory. They shifted their attention to Sunday’s 2:45 tilt against Avon, determined to follow up this win with a more complete effort. The team’s record is now 7-5-1.
