Five young girls celebrated the true meaning of the holidays this past Christmas season. Together they saved their money and purchased a goat through Heifer International.
Sydney, Peyton, and Kendall Rosen, along with their cousins, Stephanie and Shelby Bellows, all from Brooklyn, presented their gift to Cliff and Sue Moon, volunteers for Heifer.
During each day in Advent, the girls were given a dollar from their grandparents, Debbie and Austin Tanner. They were also supported by their mothers, Tiffany Rosen and Courtney Tanner- Bellows. Their dollar bills were carefully rolled and placed in a Christmas box. The girls chose to buy a goat to give to a family in another country, hopefully Haiti. This gift, along with training to raise the goat, will aid a family to improve their health and economic situation. Goat milk and other milk products increase the family’s nutrition. Extra dairy products are sold for income.
The additional money can provide education and improved living conditions. The first born offspring will be passed on to some other deserving family in the community. The Passing on the Gift empowers people to become self- reliant and makes the community sustainable. Previously, the members of the Rosen, Tanner and Bellows families have been enthusiastic supporters of Heifer. They have passed on that gift to their younger generation.
