WOODSTOCK –  Three Woodstock Academy students took first, second and third in the recent VFW audio-essay scholarship speech contest.
First place went to Mitchell Thetreault, a sophomore at The Academy.  Second place was awarded to Mitchell Cremers, also a sophomore, and third place went to senior Anna Sullivan.
Each year the VFW sponsors an audio-essay scholarship contest which is open to all high school students in grades 9-12   In order to participate a student must write and record a 3-5 minute speech about a specific topic designated by the VFW.  This year the topic to which students were asked to respond was, “Does my generation have a role in America’s future.”  Students are judged on content, originality and delivery.
The local VFW awarded cash prizes to all three of these winners.
The speech by Mitchell Thetreault, the first place winner, will automatically be entered into the Connecticut State District competition, which includes entries from high schools east of the Connecticut River.  From there the winner of the District competition will be entered into the state competition.  A winner from each of the 50 states wins an expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. and a chance to win the grand prize award of $30,000 in scholarship money.
