THOMPSON — The first members of the new Marianapolis Spanish Chapter of the National Honor Society were inducted in December: Taylor Downs, Kathleen Egan, Nicholas Fontaine, Katherine Kelly, Jennifer Lutz, Alyssa McLaughlin, Sara Morrow and Marybeth Sheldon.
Chapter faculty adviser and Language Dept. Chair Joseph Parodi said the chapter chose the name Nuestra SeƱora de Guadalupe, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and the induction took place during the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The society’s motto is “Todos a una.” Potential partnerships that this chapter will seek out include a school in Duran, Ecuador, built among the refuse of a city dump, and the orphanage in Honduras, which members of this community have visited.
The national guidelines of the society specifically cite “service and commitment to others” as a requirement for membership. Members of this Chapter affirmed by oath their understanding that “language can be a strong link between people of diverse roots and religions,” and pledge to combine their demonstrated commitment to others and their exemplary language skills to reach out to those who are marginalized and vulnerable.
