Pomfret School
Varsity Basketball
Pomfret 46 Marianapolis 36
Jan. 31: After a day of rest, the girls’ varsity basketball team took on and defeated cross-town rival Marianapolis by a score of 46-36. Though Pomfret jumped out to the early lead, Marianapolis was relentless in their pursuit of victory and came back strong to regain the lead halfway through. Pomfret’s offense was a bit flat against the opponent’s 3-2 zone, and limited movement led to too many outside shots and not enough aggressive drives to the basket. When the latter did happen, good things resulted and Jamie Samociuk, Z Hutchins and Anyolina Montilla all connected on easy jumpers at the elbows or inside the paint. However, the team continued to rely on the outside shots (10 threes in the first half) with very little offensive rebounding (only 2 in the first half). The coaches commented that it looked like the girls had nails in their feet as movement off the ball was poor. Through better defensive effort, however, the girls chipped away at the Marianapolis lead, and headed into the half down 19-22. The focus of the second half was offensive movement and defensive rebounding. “Pass and Cut” were the key words, and though it wasn’t necessarily organized or pretty, the movement created more open looks and the result was 27 second half points. Meg Gaudreau and Alyson Chase each connected from behind the 3-point line as Whitney Willingham and Meg Calderado added from the paint and the foul line respectively. Defensively the girls clamped down a bit as well, holding the opponent to only 14 second half points.
Hyde
Varsity Basketball
Hyde 20  St. Andrews 43
Jan. 29: Hyde traveled to St. Andrews after a week’s hiatus due to bad weather during the week.  St. Andrews had seven of their nine players score but the Wolf Pack only had three girls out of 11 in the scoring column.  The defense did not allow any three point shots but did struggle to stop their dribble penetration.  It was good to have Andrea Crute ’12 back after a week away.  The team’s offense has yet to come together but the potential is there if and when the whole team is at practice and then dressed for a game. Scoring: Mari Barnett ’11 1-0-2, Lara Cornelius ’11 4-1-9, and Andrea Crute ’12 3-3-9.
