The girls closed their regular season at 14-6 and head to the NEPSAC Class B quarterfinals, vs. Governor’s Academy, March 2.
Pomfret 47 Westminster 25
Feb. 26: The girls capped off the season with a 47-25 victory over Class A rival Westminster School. Meg Gaudreau started all scoring with an open three- pointer at the top of the key, but Westminster responded with a 3 of their own on the next trip down the floor. Play continued much the same as Pomfret just couldn’t seem to execute well enough on either end of the court to fully pull away from the opponent. Alyson Chase was a nice spark for the team in the final 5-6 minutes of the half; playing deny defense, Alyson grabbed two steals which the team converted into baskets on the fast break opportunity. Score at half Pomfret 26 - Westminster 12. Jamie Samociuk assisted five of the nine baskets that Pomfret scored in these opening 16 minutes of play (and finished with a team high 8 assists) while Gaudreau and Z Hutchins each finished with 4 defensive rebounds apiece. Though the second half saw a better execution of offenses, it was just one of those days where good scoring opportunities were created but good shots were not. The work was done to get the ball in a position to score, but Pomfret just couldn’t seem to put the ball in the hoop. In the closing minutes of the game, the flex offense was run with patience and purpose, opening up some of the best scoring opportunities. A highlight of these minutes was Joddie Iyalekhue’s assist from the elbow to Anyolina Montilla underneath the basket.
Varsity Ice Hockey
Pomfret 0 Milton 3
Feb. 23: Despite playing one of the more complete games of the season, the Griffins just could not find the back of the net. The first period started with a lot of back and forth play. Pomfret soon settled into a groove and had consistent offensive zone pressure for a large portion of the first period. An up-ice feed from Valerie DiLella gave Izzy Regine a chance to put Pomfret up 1-0, but even though Izzy beat the goaltender, her shot hit the post and went wide. Ashley Anctil also had a quality chance that was turned aside by the Milton goaltender. Gabby Criscuolo stopped a few Milton forwards 1 vs. 1 and Kristy Brown made some key saves to keep the game scoreless in the first.
Milton played simple, hard-nosed hockey in the second period and were rewarded with the only three goals of the game. Milton threw all pucks at the net and eventually snuck one past Kristy to go up 1-0. The next two goals were the product of hard work and sheer determination. Milton created traffic in front of the net, and feisty forwards outworked Pomfret’s defense, caught some lucky bounces, and jammed home rebounds. Pomfret was not without scoring chances of their own in the second. Good forechecking by Nataly Maloney gave both Cassie Catlow and Alison Horst quality opportunities in the slot that were stifled by the Milton defenders. Moira MacArthur found herself on the doorstep of the powerplay to cut the lead, but was stripped of the puck just seconds before she could bury it into the back of the net. Brooke Bytalan made a good defensive rush up ice, but her slap shot was turned aside by the Milton goaltender. Heading into the third period, Pomfret started off the third period on the powerplay. The unit of Anctil, Catlow, Jordan Lipson, Candace Lu and Andi Nicholson set up countless great scoring chances, but could not get the puck in the net. With five minutes remaining in the third, Pomfret took two penalties in the span of 15 seconds. This put Milton on a 5 vs. 3 for well over a minute. Milton called a time out, but the Pomfret penalty kill unit of Lilah Fones, Moira MacArthur and Cassie Catlow did a textbook job of keeping Milton at bay. Kristy was smart between the pipes, smothering all her rebounds. Kristy saw 28 shots on the day.
