Since 1982, Frog Rock Youth Basketball has been committed to providing boys and girls in the towns of Pomfret and Eastford with a co-ed, recreational, basketball learning experience, emphasizing sportsmanship and fair play. The league concluded another fun season on March 12 with three exciting, division championship games.
Combining a stifling defense with timely shooting, the Lakers won the 3rd and 4th grade division in convincing fashion.
The Magic tickled the twine with regularity and displayed some excellent ball handling skills in winning the 5th and 6th grade division.
The Sixers were victorious in the 7th and 8th grade division by draining a few long range bombs to compliment their dominant inside game.
The SSG Joseph E. Phaneuf Memorial Award for dedication to Frog Rock Basketball is presented annually in honor of Joe Phaneuf, an Eastford resident who was a devoted volunteer and coach for many local youth sports leagues prior to giving his life for his country in Afghanistan in December 2006. The award was presented this year to Phil Willis. Phil coached his three children through 10 years of Frog Rock Basketball and was president of the league for eight years. Phil was only the third President in the league’s 28 years and he was honored for his commitment to the Frog Rock mission of sportsmanship and fair-play.
Frog Rock has been fortunate to have numerous dedicated coaches and volunteers. Recognized for his service to the league was Wally Topliff who coached his three children over a thirteen year period. Wally was a league commissioner and performed many administrative duties for the league. Earl Semmelrock, also a league commissioner, was honored for eleven years of coaching. Earl often coached teams in more than one division at the same time. The coaching team of Brian and Theresa Hanlon was also applauded for their 9 years of service to the league.
