'Superstar'
starts April 8
PUTNAM — The Black Box Theater in the Complex Performing Arts Center on Front Street will present Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Jesus Christ Superstar” at 8 p.m. April 8, 9, 15, 16 and at 2 p.m. 10, 17.
This popular 1971 rock opera highlights the interpersonal struggles between Judas Iscasriot and Jesus as well as the heightened political climate of the time. Based loosely on the gospels’ account of the last week of Jesus life, the plot focuses on the tragic figure of Judas, played by Paul Lucenti who acts on his dissatisfaction with the direction in which Jesus, played by Jon Carpentier, steers his disciples. Twentieth-century attitudes and sensibilities, as well as contemporary slang pervade Tim Rice’s lyrics, and ironic allusions to modern life are scattered throughout the depiction of political events.
Carl Mercier is the director and the music director is Stephen Thompson. Tickets are $18. For reservations call 963-7170.
