Coed Varsity Tennis
MPS is in the midst of a rebuilding year in the SENE, having lost seven excellent players from a 12-4 year in the spring of 2010.  Much will be expected from senior Yu Cheng Chou and juniors Jerry Ming, Nick Fontaine, and Leon Tu.  Newcomers Jose Rodriguez and Lauren George will also have to play well for MPS to challenge perennial powers Williams and Rocky Hill (Rhode Island) in the SENE.  Said coach William Benedict, “We are looking forward to a fun and challenging season.”
Coed Varsity Track
The 2010 Marianapolis girls’ track team had a successful year, where they worked together to secure a second place finish in the SENE league and a third place finish in the Odell league.
The coaches have strong expectations of the 2011 team as Senior Captain, jumping phenom Greg Diaz returns. Seth Aubin continues to grow as a sophomore and should start to place in the top of his events. Junior, Marissa Iamartino, will return to running distance after her premier in 2010. Last year, she qualified for the New England’s in two of her three distance events. Our returning throwers, seniors Rufus Liu Laura Woodcock and Marybeth Sheldon (javelin, shot put and discus events) who have had strong showings in their respective events.  Hurdlers, Heidi Charles and Olivia Sage should also continue to be competitive in their field. Coach Rob Rawcliffe predicts, “it looks like it could be a rebuilding year, with some bright spots for individuals.”
Golf (Coed Varsity)
Marianapolis has enjoyed a long and very strong tradition of golfing excellence dating back to the school’s founding in 1926. One of the graduates became Tom Watson’s lifetime caddy on the PGA tour, many have attended superb golfing colleges and universities, and some of these have gone on to become golfing teachers and pros. Marianapolis golfers have won many league and individual championships in every decade since the 1970s.
The Golden Knights won the 2010 SENE Regular Season Championship for the third consecutive year last spring.  However, the tournament team of Zachary Morin, Justin Howland, Zachary Wang, and Max Reisdorf finished in third place overall in the league championship tournament played at Norwich Golf Club.  According to Coach Eric Gustavson, the 2011 golf squad’s success will be based on the fact that every one of our eight starters will return for the spring 2011 season.  Senior captain, Zach Morin (# 1 man) and (# 3) man Zachary Wang from China will lead the Knights with their experience, while Juniors Justin Howland (# 2 man), Max Reisdorf (Co-Captain) (# 4 man), Hayden Yaworski (# 5 man), Ryan Whittenburg (# 6 man), Jon Williams (# 7 man), and Sophomore Nick Borowski (# 8 man) all scored well in almost every one of their matches last year.  The squad is looking very experienced with tremendous depth and should be able to repeat as regular season SENE champions for the fourth consecutive year. The main focus of the team will be to win the 4 man SENE Tournament Championship to be played at the end of the season on May18 and finish much higher in the standings in the Wildcat Classic on May 23rd, a tournament that decides who the best golf teams are east of the Connecticut River.
Boys’ Lacrosse
Coming off a season of both adversity and success, the Marianapolis Golden Knights boys’ lacrosse team is poised for renewed progress this year. A new addition to the coaching staff, Scott Sheridan, will bring a new unbridled passion to the offensive front, while head coach Jake Sumner will anchor the defensive side of the game with Senior Captain Jason Tata as the team’s defensive leader. Coach Sheridan played lacrosse at Bates College and previously was an assistant coach of the boys varsity team at Hamden Hall, a young and successful program in Hamden.  Coach Sumner is in his second season at the helm of the boys' lacrosse program and hopes to improve even further with a strong group of seniors anchored by captains Jason Tata and Ryan Werge and co-captain Ben Gustavson. Other notable veteran players include Ben Gaudet (attack), James Scheuritzel (defense), Liam Adams (attack), and Eric Bordua (midfield). These veterans will be looking to younger, talented players such as Jeff Peiczarka, Luke Jones, and Matt Simms to compete for positions and playing time. “The boys have worked hard this off-season with an extensive off-season lifting and skills-based program while attending pre-season tournaments,” said coach Sumner.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Girl’s Lacrosse at Marianapolis is looking forward to an exciting spring season.  With several seniors graduating, the Knights have a small group of returning players that are eager to mentor the new, incoming players to the sport.  With the anticipation of a sizable team for the 2011 season the team hope to strengthen the girls’s lacrosse program at Marianapolis like never before.
With the addition of science teacher and former MPS Girl’s Lacrosse team captain (2006), Lauren Quevillon, and Admissions Director Dan Harrop to the coaching staff, the team hopes to build and strengthen the skills the girl’s will need to have a successful season. Returning players include Vanessa Wallace, Jamie Barrett and Jessica Kibbe.
Softball
The 2011 Golden Knights Softball team enters the season with a string of 5 consecutive SENE league titles.  The 2011 team is looking now toward capturing its first ever WNEPSGSBA Class B championship after three consecutive post-season appearances with a squad of returning veterans and one of the most talented freshman class in the program’s history, according to coaches Eric Reimann and Joseph Cacciapuoti.
Led by senior captains and 4-year lettermen Mary McGinn and Alyssa McLaughlin, the Golden Knights return several key positions including battery mates Juniors Sara Morrow – pitcher, and last year’s batting champion and catcher Jen Lutz.  Playing defense behind Morrow will be a solid core of battle-tested veterans and new players with McLaughlin anchoring 3rd and senior Alyson Stolz at the other corner and up the middle,  3-year starter junior Chelsea Freishlag -2-B, and gifted freshman Jill Bodreau at shortstop. The last line of defense will be an experienced and talented outfield with McGinn leading the group in center and Junior Jocelyn Cacciapouti in left field and last years rookie of the year Emily Audet will see time in right field.
Newcomers Bodreau, Shannon Madden, Miranda Lazzara, Elaina Cosentino, Becky Stolz and Mary-Teresa Egan will make an immediate impact and see considerable playing time as the future of the Knights is in very good hands with this youthful group of athletes who will provide depth at every position.
Frisbee
Ultimate Frisbee (or simply ‘Ultimate’ as the sport is officially called) is a fast-paced and fast-growing sport combining elements of soccer, football, hockey and, of course, frisbee into a contest of speed, strategy, and gravity-defying dives. Marianapolis opened its first varsity Ultimate season as an inaugural member of the Connecticut Ultimate Conference (CUC) and has also joined NEPSUL, comprised of many other prep schools.
The Ultimate Frisbee team begins this 2011 Spring season with a new slate of coaches and a fresh approach to the program. Coaches on board this year include former MPS Ultimate Frisbee standout, and now-faculty member Isaac Peters-Cooper along with Dan Adiletta heading up the varsity team, and Mr. Dan Hodes as the coach of the junior varsity team. The team welcomes many new faces while returning a large number of veterans. Sung Yeol Kim (’11) and Trevor Ouellet (’11) will lead the team as captains, setting the standard for hard work, love of the game and spirit. “The team will be working very hard this season to learn the new system and develop their individual and team skills. We hope to see a strong showing at the home games this season,” said coach Peters-Cooper.
