NECONN
girls' team
heading
to state cup
The NECONN Tigers Under-16 girls soccer team won a decisive victory recently at their home field in Killingly.
The match ended with a score of 7-3, with NECONN removing their opponent Haddam-Killingworth from advancing to the next round of the statewide Connecticut Cup.
Outstanding defense was orchestrated by keeper Danielle Nowak, with strong performances by defenders Paige Carito, Joelle Morrone, Dylan O’Hara, Rachelle Pepin and Carly Quinn.
The heat of the day did not slow down NECONN’s midfielders, as their ceaseless effort resulted in controlling the middle of the field.  Midfielders during this game included: Meagan Hernberg, Courtney Lavoie, Mackenzie Papuga, Monica Phongsa and Lily Pritchard.
The team’s wide array of offensive strategies kept Haddam-Killingworth second-guessing where and when the NECONN team would attack next.  Playing the forward position that day were:  Harley Blodgett, L’Or Puymartin and Carly Scott.
Teammates who were not able to participate in this particular game were:  Hannah Fillmore, Abby Horst, Alison Horst and Janna Mullaly.
Although their presence was sorely missed, they will be playing in future games.
The Tigers will next play in the Cheshire Memorial Day Weekend Tournament.
Then on June 4, the team will return to Cup competition and compete against Shelton in the “Elite Eight” bracket.
“The NECONN club provides an outstanding opportunity for players of all ages,” said Syd Blodgett, one of the Tigers’ coaches. “Many, if not most, of these young athletes eventually play for their high schools, and are the primary players on those teams.”  The team is also coached by Mark Fillmore, Air Phongsa and Bill Morrone.
