WOODSTOCK — A Woodstock Middle School student placed third in the Juniors - Papers division in the state’s annual History Day competition.
Roosevelt Sowka won for his paper “Internment of Japanese-Americans During WWII: The Debate Between Protecting Civil Liberties and Preserving National History.”
State competitors were identified from a pool of contestants at five regional contests throughout the state. First- and second-place winners at the state competition will advance to the National History Day contest. The state competition involved students in grades 6- 12, with separate categories for the Junior Division (grades 6-8) and Senior Division (grades 9-12). In each division, there are nine contest categories in formats ranging from written papers to dramatic performances, documentaries, and exhibits.
History Day in Connecticut is jointly sponsored by The Connecticut Historical Society and Connecticut’s Old State House, with funding provided by the Connecticut Humanities Council.
