PUTNAM — In Putnam Little League action last week, the Putnam Junior League improved to 2-1 with a win over the Brooklyn Little League Juniors May 21.
Jacob Guertin pitched for Putnam striking out seven batters over six innings. Nicholas Foucault came in to relieve Jacob and pitched the final inning, striking out two batters in the 4-1 win.
Putnam scored two runs in the second inning on consecutive base hits by Kyle Ciquera, Jon-Luc Cournoyer, Josh Allard, Kyle Loomis, Shawn Audet and Kristian Burke.
As usual, the Putnam defense was outstanding, retiring four batters in each of the first five innings. Brooklyn scored its only run with two outs in the sixth inning after a throwing error and a passed ball put a runner at third. The next batter, Dylan Clarke, hit a single driving in the Brooklyn runner.
Putnam added some insurance runs in the sixth as Steven Dakai doubled to deep right center driving in Nick Foucault. Steven was driven in by Ciquera’s double into center field.
Putnam and Brooklyn belong to the Quinebaug Valley Baseball League along with Woodstock, Pomfret, Thompson and Killingly.
Each team plays a 10-game schedule followed by a playoff and championship.
Although it is part of the Little League, the games are played on the full-sized diamond by standard rules. For some of these boys it is their first exposure to real baseball.
