A winning
week for
Pomfret
youth
lacrosse
The Pomfret Youth Lacrosse Boys’ Junior B Team started their week with an 11-1 victory vs. Bloomfield on May 31. The team jumped out to a 4-0 first quarter lead and never looked back. Scorers in the first period were Peyton Durand with one goal and two assists, Tucker Sheehan with two goals, Carson Hadley with a goal, and Max Paro with an assist. In the second quarter, Marcos Castillo, Ryan Black and Josh McFadden found the back of the net with Paro and Castillo adding assists to give the team a 7-0 lead into the half.
In the second half, Bloomfield got on the board, but Sam Paul (2 goals), McFadden and Connor Quinn countered the Bloomfield lone goal to make the final score 11-1. Goalies Corbin Schneider and Josh McFadden combined in the net for the team’s tenth victory of the season.
On June 5, the team traveled to Somers for the Paul Bowers Memorial Tournament. Pomfret played four, 25-minute games on the day and walked away with a 3-0-1 record.
First up was West Hartford Gold. West Hartford jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead before Pomfret would respond with two Peyton Durand goals to knot the score at 2-2. Tucker Sheehan would assist on the first goal and Carson Hadley would assist on the second. West Hartford would rebound and take the lead into the final seconds of the game, but Pomfret’s Carson Hadley would record the equalizer on an assist from Ryan Black to give the team a 3-3 tie in the morning tilt. Marcos Castillo was sensational in the net for the Pomfret team throughout the morning.
Second on the schedule was West Hartford Blue. Similar to the earlier game, West Hartford jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. Pomfret would respond with five unanswered goals. Cal Wilcox, Ryan Black, Peyton Durand (2) and Zach Gagnon would complete the run with assists going to Max Paro and Tucker Sheehan. West Hartford would come back in the closing minutes to tighten the score at 5-4, but Ryan Black would give the team breathing room in the final seconds with his second goal of the day to secure the 6-4 win. Marcos Castillo would earn the victory in net.
In the third game of the day, Pomfret battled Glastonbury to a 3-0 win. Goalie Josh McFadden recorded the shutout. Max Paro would record an unassisted goal, and Christian Santangini would score the next two with Ryan Black earning an assist. Stars of the game go to the defense: Sam Paul, Connor Quinn, Lex Bosio, Ryan Gravier, Marcos Castillo, Josh Bernier and Carson Hadley were flawless in the defensive coverage to preserve the shutout for McFadden who had eight saves on the day.
Last up was the team from Bristol. Pomfret would give Bristol the early 1-0 lead but then would storm back with three unanswered goals by Ryan Black (assist to Tucker Sheehan), Sheehan (assist to Black), and Sam Paul (assist to Corbin Schneider). The 3-1 lead was only temporary, though, as Bristol would fight back with two goals to tie it up late in the game. Pomfret, as they had done all day, responded by winning the next two face-offs and recording goals each time down the field. Tucker Sheehan would score both goals on assists from Max Paro and Peyton Durand. Marcos Castillo would be the goalie of record, recording his second win of the day, but it was the midfield play of Corbin Schneider, Isaiah Price, and William Liscomb that stood out. These three players provided strong two-way lacrosse and kept Bristol off balance throughout much of the game.
The team’s record now stands at 13-3-1. The have earned the third seed in the post-season tournament and traveled to Monson, Mass. June 6 for the opening quarterfinal game vs. Monson.
