PUTNAM ---  The proposed Regional Community YMCA Family Center will hold a Community Information Event from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Putnam Middle School.  All are welcome.
The information event is intended, proponents said, to make sure that the voters have a clear understanding of what the Regional YMCA is all about. June 15, at 7:30 p.m. at the Putnam Middle School, a special town meeting is being held to authorize the mayor and selectmen to acquire a gift of 65 acres from Wheelabrator-Putnam for the proposed Quinebaug Regional Technology Park off Kennedy Drive.  The proposal also includes allowing the mayor and selectmen to convey 15 of those acres to the Greater Hartford YMCA for the construction of a YMCA.
That special town meeting is adjourning to a town referendum from noon to 8 p.m. June 23. West and East Putnam residents vote at the town garage on Fox Road and Special Service District residents vote at Murphy Park.
YMCA officials said  the proposed Regional Community YMCA Family Center, a branch of the YMCA of Greater Hartford, will be locally managed by a volunteer board.
YMCA officials also said the programming at the proposed YMCA will be "based on community needs and desires." It will include a competition-length swimming pool, a warm-water pool with wheelchair accessibility, a gym, a fitness center, a Childwatch Center, a multi-purpose community room, locker rooms, a sauna and a steam room.
