PUTNAM --- Joy filled the Putnam Middle School Auditorium June 18 as Putnam High School celebrated its 134th graduation.
School Superintendent William Hull laced Jackson Browne into his remarks to the excited graduates and their friends and family. His advice ranged from "never give up on anyone, Miracles happen," to "Wave at kids on school buses," to "Enjoy real maple syrup" to "Be someone's hero. If you do, the world will be a better place." He also urged the graduates not to "postpone joy."
School principal Paul Brenton felt the joy in the auditorium and on stage, too. He passed along some of his father's "infuriating" advice including: Be strong, do the right thing, listen more, pick a path and live honestly. He called them a "wonderful class" and told them sincerely, "it's added to my spirit to know you."
Eleanor Prunier, class valedictorian, also urged her class to "be yourselves." She urged her classmates to "be open-minded in the years to come. Don't just 'go with the flow.'"
Salutatorian ErinMarie Konicki said she felt confident each of her classmates would "make a difference in the world." and Stephanie Baumuller, class president, said "never give up on your dreams."
During the commencement awards ceremony Citizens of the Year went to Lisa Mooney, a school social worker and adviser to the new SADD program at the school. Educator of the year went to retiring teacher Joan Galenski and Cierra Collins won Student of the Year.
