The game was well played by both teams entering the fifth inning tied 4 to 4.
Putnam Still in the Hunt
PUTNAM --- The Putnam Little League’s 11&12 year old All Star team is finding ways to win games. Taking games to the final out before winning in walk off fashion.
July 10’s game was no different for Putnam when they hosted the Sprague/Franklin/Canterbury Little League squad. Both teams had a 3-1 record in the tournament and the loser would be going home for summer vacation.
Zack Cutler took the mound for Putnam and pitched the first four innings striking out six batters. The defense behind him was porous making four errors that led to six SFC runs. Zack left the mound losing 6-5 and gave way to Tamim Alawracheh who pitched one inning and Conor Quinn who closed the game.
Tamim had already blasted a home run, a double and a single, going 4-4 on the day, when he stepped up top the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning and hit his second double. Conor walked and joined Timim on base as the potential winning run. A wild pitch moved Tamim to third. Conor stole second.
In stepped Cole Andersen. Cole battled the SFC pitcher fouling off pitch after pitch, taking on the bad pitches and working the count to 3 and 2. The rather large crowd at Murphy Park was reaching a fever pitch as the SFC pitcher delivered. Cole checked his swing, but still made contact and lifted a weak fly ball that the pitcher called for.
Tamim and Conor held their bases, sure that the ball would be caught.
As the SFC pitcher reached for the ball, it glanced off of his glove and bounced away.
“Fair ball” yelled the ump.
Tamim hustled across the plate, tying the game 6-6! The crowd went wild.
SFC players demanded the ball had gone foul, not fair. Conor moved to third base.
The SFC coaches and players were losing their cool. Cole ran to second.
The pitcher saw Cole trying for second and threw the ball to get the out. Cole was safe, and Conor seized the opportunity to run home and score the game-winning run. Final score Putnam 7, SFC 6.
The All Stars lived to fight another day, once again in the final inning and down to their final out.
Conor Quinn was the winning pitcher and scored the game-winning run. Tristan Vanscoy went 2 for 4 with a home run and Alex Morowski went 1-1.
Putnam travels to Mansfield Monday for another elimination game.
