Carminella L. Deotte

PUTNAM — Carminella Lena (Navarro) Deotte, 89 of Woodstock Avenue, died July 29, 2011, in Bayberry Commons in Pascoag, R.I., after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.  She was the wife of the late Louis H. Deotte.
Born in 1922 in N. Grosvenordale, she was the daughter of the late Sabato “Sam” and Jennie (Leo) Navarro.
Mrs. Deotte worked as the head cook for Day Kimball Hospital for 15 years.  She enjoyed cooking, taking walks, and spending time with her family.
She leaves two daughters, Christine Raymond and her fiancé Paul Cayer of Voluntown and Denise Cimochowski and her fiancé Wayne Edwards of Putnam; four brothers, Raymond Navarro of Pomfret, Angelo Navarro of Putnam, Danny Navarro of Pompeo, Fla., and John Navarro of Dayville; two sisters-in-laws, Ann Navarro of Pomfret and Patricia Rogers of Interness, Fla.; four grandchildren and their spouses, Marne and Eric Gustafson of North Carolina, Monique and Nils Gustafson of Nebraska, Kyle and Stacy Cimochowski of Putnam and Eric Cimochowski and his partner Austen; six great grandchildren. She was predeceased by six brothers; David, Rocco, Anthony, Joseph, Salvatore and Edward Navarro and a son-in-law Edward F. Raymond.
The Mass of Christian Burial was Aug. 1 in St. Mary Church of the Visitation, Putnam, with burial in St. Mary Cemetery. Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam.

Sister Imelda
Michaud, DHS
PUTNAM — Sr. Imelda Michaud, 80, a member of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit, died July 27, 2011 at Holy Spirit Provincial House where she had been in residence since November of 2010.
She was born on Dec. 15, 193,0 in Hartford,and was the daughter of the late Fernand and Imelda (Nadeau) Michaud.  She entered religious life in 1947 at the Holy Spirit Provincial House in Putnam and made her religious profession on Aug. 23, 1950, in St. Brieuc, France.  She was then known as Sr. Imelda de l’Eucharistie.
She taught from 1950 to 1953 after which she was sent to study nursing at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford where she obtained her RN. The she obtained a bachelor’s degree and served as a nursing supervisor at Holy Ghost Convalescent Hospital in Uncasville as well as the Villa St. Joseph in Putnam.  She also taught biology at Putnam Catholic Academy, and at Annhurst College where she served as both teacher and nurse at both locations.  In 1971 she was named Provincial Councilor and in 1978 she was elected General Councillor with residence at the Generalate in Rennes, France.  In 1990 she returned to the U.S.and was named District Coordinator of DHS ministries in CA.  In 1992 she became Director of Pastoral Ministry and Health Services at Mercy Hospital in Merced, Calif., and in 1997 she became Regional Spiritual Services Director at San Joaquin—Sierra Region.  In 2002, she became Assistant Director of CA Associates and she moved Patterson, Calif. As her health declined she retired to Holy Spirit Provincial House in 2010.
She leaves a step brother, Paul Michaud of Sanford, Fla.; several cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial was July 30 at the Provincial House Chapel. Donations: DHS Retirement Fund, Holy Spirit Provincial House, 72 Church St., Putnam, CT 06260. Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam.

Eleanor A. Morano
BROOKLYN —  Eleanor (Andrews) Morano, 93, of Canterbury Road, formerly of N. Grosvenordale,  died July 14, 2011, in the Pierce Memorial Baptist Home.  Born in 1918 in Los Angeles,, she was the daughter of the late Archie and Eleanor (Underwood) Andrews. Mrs. Morano was a volunteer during WWII.  She worked as a research interviewer for Decision Research.  She was a devout Catholic who at one time owned and operated Contemporary Christian Arts, a Catholic gallery, shop, library and discussion center.  She volunteered in Catholic Worker soup kitchens, a foundling hospital, as nurse’s aide and in a center for child and family services.  She leaves her sons, William Cosel of Tyringham, Mass.,  and Christopher Morano of Essex; her daughters, Suzanne Whitburn of NYC, N.Y., Lu Morano of Kentfield, Calif., and Francesca Morano of Thompson; her brother, Benjamin Andrews of Greensboro, N.C.; and her sister, Charlotte Griggs of Essex; 11 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.  She was predeceased by her son, Michael Joseph Morano and ex-husbands William Cosel and Michael Morano. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 16 in St. Bernard Church in Vernon. Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam.

James Pipkin
PUTNAM — James “Gray Ghost” Pipkin, 89, died July 27, 2011, in Putnam. He was the husband of the late Maggie (Byrd). He was born March 19, 1922, in North Carolina. He was a textile worker for local mills. He leaves his children, James, Johnny, Jerome, Terry, Aggie and Doris; sister, Eva. He was predeceased by children Aretha and Willie. Services were Aug. 1 at Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove St. Putnam.

Barbara E. Smith,

POMFRET CENTER — Barbara E. Smith, 93, of Pomfret Center, died July 27, 2011. She was the wife of James Smith. He died June 21, 1984.
She was born Oct. 10, 1917, in Norwich, daughter of Robert and Elizabeth (Smith) Donahue.
She graduated from Meriden Hospital School of Nursing in 1938. Barbara was a veteran of WWII serving in the Philippines with the U.S. Army as a nurse. She worked for Backus Hospital in Norwich until she retired in 1983.
She leaves her daughters: Linda Ansel (Jeffrey) of Brewster, Mass., Sharon Uguccioni of Woodstock, Mary Kinney (Paul) of Providence; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A brother and a sister have gone before her Robert Donahue and Ruth Clarke.

Arthur N. Withey,

WOODSTOCK VALLEY — Arthur N. Withey, 93, of Woodstock Valley, died at July 29, 2011, at home.
He was the husband of Faith J. (Lee) Withey.
He was born April 7, 1918, in Thompson, son of the late Henry and Eva (Braman) Withey.
He had made his home in Woodstock Valley for the past 54 years. Mr. Withey was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, serving five years in the African-European Theatre with the rank of sergeant. He was employed by the Package Machine Company in East Long Meadow, Mass., retiring in 1983. Arthur was a life member of the N.R.A., an avid sportsman.
He leaves his wife Faith J. Withey of Woodstock Valley, nieces and nephews, Shirley Geel of East Machias, Maine, Charlotte Proulx of Bangor, Maine, Arthur Saxton of Stonington, Virginia Jones of Stonington, and Shirley Perry of Groton. He was predeceased by two sisters, May Saxton and Grace Stoddard; two nephews, Raymond Saxton and Albert Saxton.
