Once the fund-raising threshold of $9 million is hit, the YMCA of Greater Hartford will form a local Board of Managers and discussions about what local people want in the proposed Regional YMCA to be built in future Quinebaug Regional Technology Park  off Kennedy Drive.
Ronald P. Coderre, chief fund-raiser for the project, said currently the project has passed the $1.3 million mark --- more than halfway to the $2.5 million goal. Including fund-raising and grants and donations, he said, the project is approaching $8 million.
When it hits $9 million the Board of Managers, which includes local residents, will begin their work customizing the Regional Y to meet the northeastern Connecticut area's needs.
When the $10 million threshold is hit, a shovel will go into the ground and 14 months later, he said, the building would be completed.
"The campaign has generated a lot more momentum and passion," Coderre said, "following the recent referendum."
James Morton, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Hartford, speaking at the Putnam Rotary Club, last week said the Regional Y would contain 45,000 to 50,000 square feet and bring 25 full time and 65 to 70 part-time jobs. He said the Regional Y would stress health and wellness for all ages. He added the Y is pursing partnerships with local specialized health and fitness businesses and with Day Kimball Healthcare.
YMCA officials also said the programming at the proposed YMCA will be “based on community needs and desires.” It will include a competition-length swimming pool, a warm-water pool with wheelchair accessibility, a gym, a fitness center, a Childwatch Center, a multi-purpose community room, locker rooms, a sauna and a steam room.
Total projected costs  when fund-raising started are $13 million, of which $2.5 million is being raised through the support of individuals, businesses and organizations.
The Newell D. Hale Foundation is making a $3 million gift and the state of Connecticut awarded the project a grant of $3.745 million.
